turlyming drive failure

turlyming.com (metafilter.com's primary mx, primary/secondary ns, and #mefi host) suffered a drive failure yesterday. while matt has his bases covered, you may still experience minor delays in ns lookups for metafilter.com addresses and of course, the irc channel is unavailable until i can rebuild the box.

Thanks, chrish! We selfish users probably have no idea of all the work, time, headaches and expense that go into keeping this shebang going. But the moment it's down for a while, like yesterday, we suddenly begin to form an idea... Here's hoping that "box rebuilding", whatever it is, isn't too time-consuming or brain-frazzling!

Is the hard drive that contains the Metafilter archive backed up? A RAID array?

Actually no, it's just a normal IDE drive. And funny enough, the main hard disk in the metafilter server itself is slowly dying.

The site goes down intermittently because the disk hits errors, and shuts down web and database services. I have to notice, and remotely restart them. I'm hoping to fix it next weekend though.

Though the channel has died down a lot, some people and I still try to meet on Wen. night around 10-12pm EST (and some of us are occasionaly there at other times)...you should come by some time and try it out on a Wen night (though the server may not be up by tomarrow night from the sound of it).

Hm, I don't doubt that you're right, chrish, but I had been connecting to the server using .net, with the scrolling into stuff and other mefi members in the channel. Odd.

i did not renew turlyming.net. so, at some point, the hostname will stop resolving. :-)
