Of course, don't bother to actually follow through to the content of the link, instead you'd rather be the first to wish me a Happy New Year, Mefi-style.

Mommy! Quonsar's being mean! Tell him to stop touching me!

Yonderboy - it's traditional that the first two comments in any thread are gratuitous and snarky. Give it time. Someone'll steer it back on course.

I don't think MeTa should be used to protest such a small number of comments. You only get to post a "Look what they've done to my thread, Ma" thread after at least...*comes up with random number greater than 2*.

I posted my 300th thread today, you know. ;)

So, quonsar's got the christmas crankies. It's ok. Honest, he won't beat your dogs or sell your children to the gypsies. And really, there have been a buhzillion "best of" threads lately. One can understand how the meme might be wearing a tad thin. (So, these best of links...they vibrate? heh, sorry...new parent exhaustion is making me loopy.)

On the other hand, I liked the medical care vs murder link...interesting theory.

I've thought that too, Miguel, but I've seen enough threads derailed simply because the first comments "snarked" on the post and/or poster, then I remembered what MetaTalk was for, helping people understand when a post is lacking, or when a comment is inappropriate and counter-productive to the beginning of a thread.

In any case, quonsar is only planning on getting expelled in 2003 - so it's a bit early yet. Not that I won't be sorry to see him go.

Seriously, quonsar's comments are always great fun and they generally bring good luck to a thread. Unless you whine about them, that is. That undermines their power completely. ;)

Happy New Year, yonderboy, Non-MeFi-style.

Don't sweat it. I've even been cranky lately. Holiday rush-around/ maybe need valium-laced eggnog?

Merry Holidays to you, anyway,

Don't worry, yonderboy, it's just quonsar being quonsar. Learn to enjoy him.

I call bullshit. If new user number 18000 made that post, people would have freaked out. I think most of Quonsar's posts are amusing, but this was stupid and rude.

I agree that it was extremely crappy. Matt has been clear with his feelings on comments, particularly early in a thread, that try only to derail the thread, and it seems to me that anyone else who cares a whit about the site will feel similarly.

Thanks for the effort quonsar, but my recent post apparently warrants no piling-on (nor discussion evidently - not even of the snarky kind). It seems I misunderestimated the potential enthusiasm for a round-up of round-ups. Happy Christmas to all anyhow.

Post criticism and hijacking like this is so easy it's almost barbaric; that it's veiled as an attempt to improve MetaFilter, ironic. Vitriol within the first few comments seems to only fulfill a personal need. I doubt that such comments regarding your assessment of what makes a viable post are needed so early in thread. But, before deciding how to formulate your next criticism, read the content of the link so you actually have something contructive to offer or look for better supporting links. If you don't think you'll be able to find or offer either, don't bother with the thread in the first place.

Reading the comments here, overall, I wonder is it encouraged, accepted? If so, newer members get a poor impression and the quality of threads suffer. There were several interesting items in the NYTM article, it wasn't really a 'best of-list' as much as a series of unrelated short articles. Your comment only proves that it's easy to kill a thread early on, crickets indeed.

Now that you've continued the rant and we see that no one really cares, you've gone ahead and made a contributing comment to the same thread. Since you weren't at the beginning poised to stamp it out, it seems to have thrived quite nicely. Give it up already, you don't even believe it yourself anymore.
