list with URLs of the various MeFi junkies January 16, 2001 8:17 AM   Subscribe

Would it be possible to create a member list with URLs of the various MeFi junkies out there? I realize one can just click on the names, but I would love a way to just scroll through a list.

...and if you make it an alphabetical list, I'll be a happy camper! =]

...and with flashy lights and a bit of carousel music? ;-)

With pictures of every member. Baby pictures, of course.

In *numerical* order.

1 = mathowie
2 = ?

A list? Of all 3,034 members? Are y'all nuts? :)

webmutant, it's easy enough to paginate such a list. Show records N through N+100.

rodii: I think most of the 1-digit number were used up with various test accounts.

Here it is, sorted by random (thanks to finding a CF tag that randomized database output based on ID):

http://www.metafilter.com/links.mefi

now, where do I put a link to this? I don't really want to put it in too public of a place, since the query is pretty gnarly (I'm sitting next to the box, and the randomize function adds a few seconds to the processing).

Jofus has a malformed link in his profile which messes up the full list when I view it.

very cool. to ease the load, perhaps you could write it out once per day rather than upon each request. it could still be random of course. it might also be nice to include posts and comments next to each person's name/URL.

Good idea, I could just do this once every 24 hours. You can see all their posts and comments by clicking on their name, and going to their user profile.

Very cool indeed. So who are all the missing people? People who don't have pages linked?

One request, could group them by url? So all the haughey.com's, etc can be listed together?
posted by riffola at 8:48 PM on January 16, 2001

group by url? what do you mean? There are three haughey.com's in the list because one's a test account, and another is one someone else setup.

Sorry I should have been clearer.
I meant it would be nice if the members with the same urls would be listed next to each other.
So all (the two) members who list www.metafilter.com as their homepage would be listed next to each other.

DoublePostGuy's www.metafilter.com
metacomet28's www.metafilter.com

Actually since you are randomizing the list, it would be silly to do the above and then randomize it. Ignore the request.

yes, the list only seems to cover people with web pages listed. Postroad for example.

So who are all the missing people?

People asked for a list of links to web pages of the metafilter membership and I built that.

How am I supposed to list links to someone's site when they don't tell me what their homepage URL is? It's up to anyone that wants to be on that list to put the information in their preferences.

the list only seems to cover people with web pages listed

Sorry, my powers of deduction are not strong enough to guess the URLs for the thousand or so people that neglected to tell me what their homepage is. I know, I should be ashamed, any magician of my caliber should be able to guess a thousand URLs based on username. I hope you're not all too disappointed in me. :)

Well, I'm officially disillusioned. :-)

Get back behind that curtain, Matt, maybe I can edit my memory or something.

Wow. This is the original link motherlode. Thanks a ton, Matt. It should help me get over the shock of finding out someone else has a close derivative of my name.

It's very cool to see all these web people that you admire in the same list as you.

Question: If someone changes the URL in their preferences will the list automatically change to the new one?
posted by crushed at 1:03 PM on January 17, 2001

Yes, it will. It queries the database either every time you hit the page or, if Matt's implemented it (considering the load time, I don't think he has yet), it generates it every 24 hours. So new people and changed info will be included.
posted by cCranium at 1:22 PM on January 17, 2001

Matt, I'm not complaining, just noticing.

Riffola, if you want the URLs sorted a certain way, download the list and sort 'em. It's easy.

Apologies for being slightly off-topic, but I'm just curious: Matt, what cf tag did you use to randomize the output?
posted by jed at 6:42 PM on January 17, 2001

jed, the tag was this one. I was working on a function to randomize the userIDs that come back, decided to try the CF exchange site, and found that someone already did exactly what I wanted. I downloaded it, plopped it on the server, and the output was instantly randomized. That's what I love about coldfusion, the great developer community that Allaire (ahem, Macromedia) fosters.

Things the list has taught me:
  • MeFi is not strict with user names. I am 'john' and there are 2 others named 'John'
  • Even if you have not posted, it will simply state that: (username) has posted to MetaFilter
  • I could never hope to keep up with so many pages, at least I can still see what all of you think here.
  • I can be startled by ice popping in my drink. Time to play some tunes.

</sarcasm>

sorry that wasn't exactly what I meant, I guess I missed the point.

I was mainly looking at the list as a list of all users with a link to their user profiles and (if available) the web page.
posted by lagado at 10:16 PM on January 17, 2001

lagado, I never created such a list because I never warned users of MeFi that their membership in the site would be made public someday.

I did however, ask for everyone's URLs, and the whole point of giving me your URL is to advertise your site, so I figured a list of everyone with a URL isn't much a privacy breach, when traffic and visibility is the whole reason to add URLs to the db.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 12:45 PM on January 22, 2001

john, the user db is strict with usernames, there was however, a month or so where I left out the code to make sure of that, and in that time some people signed up under names that were already used. It won't happen again in the future though.

Matt, would the MetaTalk bar be too public? I see a loverly little space right under the MetaFilter hyperlink that would be rather suitable...
