Is this where we post our guesses? Is this like "What's the Connection?" Or is an explanation to add some meaning to this forthcoming?

i don't get it either. it's too newsy? if i was into and enthralled over every single thing here, i'd get even less done. so some stuff is pop culture-y / newsy, so what.

I think dash_slot- is trying to tell us that the specified threads are double posts.

If you're going to make a post related to Iraq and the impending war, please reconsider, as the topic has been discussed previously many times.- mathowie

Is it that? It could be, but the shuttle thread and the SUV thing aren't included....

I give up! What's the connection?

sometimes i love metafilter. it's funny. it can be funny. i've laughed out loud at some of the things coldchef and many many others have said. it's also like a form of education. exposing me to thing i would not get in any other way. i remember when i heard the first news story on my local news channel that i had already heard about on metafilter. i felt so special.

then sometimes it's like an energy sucking bad relationship. bleh.

I'm guessing it's that every thread there has the word "Iraq" in it. But only the last two are about Iraq/war.

And by the way........ I haven't posted on the front page for a long time. I didn't know that Matt was asking people explicitly to not post Iraq/war stuff.

So...... Macboy and Steve_at_Linnwood? Why did you post your Iraq/war posts? Other Iraq/war stuff is ass, but yours is golden?
posted by y6y6y6 at 7:41 PM on February 4, 2003

I made no comment about the other Iraq posts, so I don't know where you get that condescending idea....

I don't get it, dashie, sir - when I click on your "read the instructions" link all I get is my familiar textual nemesis:

You cannot post to the front page at this time. This can be due to one of several things. You may not have been a member long enough, you may not have posted enough comments, or you may have already posted a link in the past 24 hours.

If I had a penny for every time I've read these dire, forbidding, annoyingly accurate words, I'd own all the oil in Iraq by now, would sign it over to Texaco and none of these threads would be around to annoy you. :)

On the page where you may post links to the front page there is some polite text from Matt, "If you're going to make a post related to Iraq and the impending war, please reconsider".

Into that box you entered a post related to Iraq and the impending war.

    Why?

    ~big laugh~

Ahem, Steve_at_Linnwood, do you wear Kevlar footwear? If that wasn't the best goddamned definition-cum-example of hypocrisy I've EVER heard, I am in fact G Dubya Bush. As I've long maintained, the comical hypocrisy (which in this case borders on the obscene) of a certain segment here never fails to amuse. Your continued "participation" in political threads after you supposedly swore off for some reason back in November was blooper-reel material. But your succinct and extraordinarily revealing words today are in the very finest tradition of that certain amusing segment, and may in fact be the creme de le creme of it's genre.

    Congrats.

Don't get me wrong. I hope you keep posting. But a little hint: I think it'll be a cold day in hell before anyone "follows your lead" down hypocrisy lane. You may want to give it a rest. You may want to go spitshine your golden ass for a while, since you seem to be showing it so often here.

But thanks for the chuckles....funniest thing I've seen on MeFi for some time. I assume the humor is intentional, because the alternative is a bit disturbing.

    ~wink~

Oh this is quite obvious, everyone on MeFi wants to bitch about the political thread, but no one wants to stop with them because they are different.

Point in case, dash_slot posts this MeTa thread about FPP he dosn't like, yet posts this thread on the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy of Electronic Voting, and at the same time skips over the most trollish 'Iraq' thread of the day.

but f&m, don't talk to me about hypocrisy, you have a big enough problem with that yourself...

    Everything is political.
    Life is political.
Art, culture, technology, all the good stuff that we are supposed to be posting to Metafilter, is tinged with politics.
    Emotion is political.
Any community without politics is a false utopia.
Concentrate on making good links. Participate in threads with good links. Ignore ones without good links. Mold your own community.

No, you give it a rest. I totally disagree with S@L's politics, but his attempt to start a no-political-arguments movement was brave and worthwhile; it's absurd to expect him to hold to it after pretty much everyone ignored him (except to make bitter little partisan attacks like this). If people had followed his lead, MeFi would be a better place. But obviously you like partisan bickering, so I'm talking to the wrong person.

You're saying that everyone participates in these political arguments?
posted by timeistight at 1:22 PM on February 5, 2003

    Dammit.

Self-policing works by leading by example. The point isn't to make people think like you do; we already know we're notoriously bad at accomplishing that here. The point is to cut out your own little portion of the noise. And hopefully more people get it as time goes on.

I'm not the MeFi police; neither is dash_slot-, or S@L, or y6, or PST. There's one guy that is, and we already know how he feels. But since he's obviously handling it in a hands-off kinda way, the only we can do is make an honest effort to follow along, on an individual basis. Saying "But everyone else is doing it" is a cop-out of that responsibility.
