Best blogs poll over at Forbes. March 18, 2003 12:00 AM   Subscribe

Perfidious sideblog-collapsers, please take note: Forbes Magazine is holding a Best Luxury Media Blogs Under $5 Poll and MetaFilter is currently ahead, despite ferocious competition from the despicable opposition, i.e. the honourable Romenesko and bleedin' Gawker, no less. Can we win? Should we? Do we want to? [Do please check sideblog for the official communiqué.]

There's no limit to topics fit for Metafilter readers. There are links about the possibility of war with Iraq and about Albert Einstein's birthday, some from mainstream publications, others from the very fringe. Everything from Iraq to the anniversary of Einstein's birthday is offered up for dissection.

WHAT.
THE.
FUCK.
FORBES?

posted by troutfishing at 6:42 AM on March 18, 2003

It's nice to be noticed, and I don't fault Matt for running with this as far as possible. But the fact is MetaFilter ain't a media blog. Romenesko is.

Still, if MeFi, not even being a media blog, can best those that are, then hooray for us.

Oh, and, uh, Matt.

ach! taz, i'm not REALLY upset about this, i just love giving the sarge the bizniss...

but i am surprised that this wasn't in meta, that it just appeared without comment on the sidebar, and from that i imputed (probably incorrectly) that matt found it rather embarrassing and wondered why he didn't address it forthrightly. no big deal.

forbes really has no clue about the internet.

and when did gawker become a media blog? it's just yuppie gossip

exactly. they're comparing apples/oranges/pineapples

Romenesko, MeFi and GagMeWithAYuppieSpoonGawker are totally different sites. they're (in that order) a media chitchat blog, a community weblog and a CondeNastPorn yuppie extravaganza. comparisons are pointless. but I still think that, as Matt's guests, if he wants to win the contest we could do worse than stuffing the ballot for him

I agree, but they're hardly alone: no major magazine/newspaper seems to have a clue about it

K5 was in their "Best tech blogs" wrapup. Amusingly, my referer logs don't show Forbes.com yet (which means that less than 150 hits came through from that article). Gizmodo's mention of the article and who was listed brought in 426 hits.

I don't think Forbes.com is the internet powerhouse we all think it is. But beyond that, it occurred to me that while I was relatively flattered for the nod, I don't really know why. I mean, on the web K5 (and Metafilter) are much bigger and more influential than forbes.com. So why do we still feel like the kid brother of the relationship?

Heh. Now we see what the real powerhouse is. None of the Above Fark will win by a landslide.

The fark thread where they gang up to vote for "none of the above" makes for an interesting read, though - a few commenters clearly have no idea what metafilter is, but dislike it anyway. In contrast, every time there's a link here that appeared on fark, you can count on a metatalk thread about it ("should we be repeating what's already been on fark? discuss.") I'd wager that a much higher proportion of metafitler readers are also fark readers than vice-versa.

24.153 in reply to 24.1

Hmm... quite interesting. Matt Haughey of metafilter tries to rig the poll by asking members on the front page to vote for metafilter. Only as a joke of course (in the hope of future commercial success to get a higher price when he will try to sell the email addresses of members to spammers at some point).

Then they introduce their arrogance and unintelligence in a related thread.
