my name is a Mefi in-joke March 25, 2003 4:11 PM   Subscribe

Well, thanks a lot Wiki people for giving out my name as a MeFi in-joke.

Spin, Spin, the Wiki Wheel of Justice.

It's anarchy in indexed form.

Hee he, found that too, but bit tongue. Boy, the things you find connected to Meta-filter when it's down.

You're a in-joke?!

Damn, I just lost a bet. I had you tagged as quonsar's alter ego.
posted by ?! at 4:35 PM on March 25, 2003

quonsar's alter ego.

No, not alter-ego. Miguel would be the Super-Ego and quonsar would be the Id.

Well, I guess I have to claim some (but not all) responsibility for this as wiki administrator; I confess that I can't really see the problem, since it is meant to be tongue in cheek, and after all, you are one of Mefi's most well known users. Indeed, who else did Mathowie use to demo the Mefi clothes? And according to the wiki entry, there is at least one person who loves you.

But if you don't like it, you can always remove it - that's the beauty of a wiki! (mind you, I can't guarantee that someone won't put the link back afterwards...)

Not much of a joke, actually. Quite complimentary, if I do say so myself. Congratulations, Miguel!

I just want to be taken seriously, quonsar. Is that too much to ask? Is it? Is being taken seriously too much to ask? I ask you. Is it too much?

I've often reflected on these words of yours, posted way back when we were two young whippersnappers tentatively feeling our way round MeFi:

"MetaFilter is not a game to be played lightly, Miguel. The higher up you move, the bigger the stakes get. Thus, don't be the class clown. You have to keep a straight face and treat MetaFilter as what it is: a serious undertaking among serious-minded individuals and bloggers. It's the link that counts, not the punch line.

I'm not saying you should be boring, but you should be very careful about cracking jokes and generally acting like a goof. If other users equate you with a court jester, then you'll have killed all chances of enhancing your reputation at MetaFilter. Furthermore, word gets around fast. Playing it straight is the way to go. And go easy with the trolls... Salud, amigo!"

Remember that? ;)

Miguel, I know you're excited about MeFi being back up, but really, this is even more pointless than your average MeTa post. And I could swear you already complained/boasted about this when the Wiki first appeared. But the fact is that you are a MeFi in-joke. It goes along with being a universally beloved MeFi icon. Try to be humbly proud of it.

i am honored to be the 'person' linked under 'troll' in the 'wiki'. i'd like to thank the academy, of course, and mom and dad, and moms portuguese gigilo, and, say, have i mentioned that bush is a felchwit and this war is evil? because, ya know, bush is a felchwit and this war sure is evil...

Miguel, If you posted one tenth as much, you'd be one of my favorite mefites. I don't post much, but I lurk a lot. Personally, I tend to notice posters & commenters that appear less often.

Miguel, I could have sworn I had read that quote awhile back on Mefi.

But as our resident Portuguese cult author, did you really think you could be anything BUT an icon of some sort?

What the hell does "wiki" stand for? Is it another one of those AFLAs (Annoying Four-Letter Acronyms) that seem to crop up 'round these here parts so damn much (see Mojo, MeFi, MeTa, etc.)? I read the "what is a wiki?" page from the linked wiki, but it failed to tell me what "wiki" means. Bah!

Miguel. Be taken seriously? This simply does not compute. Like a whore asking for a wedding ring.
posted by scottymac at 10:32 PM on March 25, 2003

UKFK: wiki-wiki is "quick", in Hawaiian pidgin. The term comprises, today, a variety of similar systems for creating user-editable websites.

The front page of the MeFi Wiki is, admittedly, not organized optimally for the complete newbie. I'll probably see about fixing that.

Miguel as an in-joke?

"In-jokes aren't really supposed to make any sense; there are no complicated backstories behind them. "

Is this true, Miguel? I don't know if I'd be flattered or insulted, either... maybe just a bit of both?

The second quote is from The Godfather. It's actually "Leave the gun... take the Canoli". Not sure about the first one.
posted by jonson at 11:28 AM on March 26, 2003

The first one was just quonsar indicating that his comment referred to djacobs, and that konolia had cut in front of him in line.

And hey, folks, on the issue of Miguel being taken seriously, um, seriously, have you not noticed that this was the first sentence of a joke post? Or are you all just taking the irony one step further by pretending to take it seriously? Seriously, and I do mean seriously, I still can't get through that "serious" series of phrases without laughing. Is that a quote from the Godfather?

Miguel, Miguel. The thing about wikis, is that one may just edit away at them. At worst, someone may edit it back, but this is in the nature of an information anarchy. Anyway, I've salved your pain for the present

Awwwww, sorry to drive you to such lengths, Miguel, but I was concerned that the exquisite irony of that line (so it's not a Godfather quote?) was being trampled underfoot by an increasing cabal of literalists. After all, if there's no joy, what else can one hang onto but irony?
