debka verboten April 3, 2003 9:26 AM   Subscribe

i seem to recall mathowie expressly forbidding postroad from ever posting a debka link again. since postroad continually flouts even basic metafilter guidelines and seems to regard this forum as his personal colostomy bag, i think he needs a time out.

Agreed. No more Debka.

Speaking of guidelines, it would be negligent not to mention this another important guideline, directed at those making daily Iraqfilter posts:

If you're going to make a post related to Iraq and the impending war, please reconsider, as the topic has been discussed previously many times. --mathowie

i suppose it depends on whether you take matt's note as a friendly reminder or as a capital-letter NOTE implying an ultimatum/warning.

it would be nice to not need WARNINGS and just operate on common sense and some degree of metafilterian manners.

I've already asked this once, I think, in another of the many "Postroad's shitting all over the front page" MetaTalk threads: I'd be really curious to know how many of Postroad's fpp's have been deleted -- I suppose he's the most-deleted user.

contribution indexes are cool, but a "most-deleted users" index would be even more interesting

(I'd be all for a 3-strikes-you're-out-policy, but I guess Matt's against it)

Specifically, it's reason for existence. You don't have anything to say about the thread except to imply that it's just crybabying? Twice? (Because I'm that stupid!)

Don't worry, man. This whole place is just here for your own amusement and glory. I think it's in the guidelines.
posted by Skot at 10:30 AM on April 3, 2003

Um, Skot, I think it's a perfectly logical reply given the FPP's reference to a "time out."

Not that quonsar wants or needs defending . . .
posted by hackly_fracture at 10:41 AM on April 3, 2003

yeah, it's wasn't really an ultimatum. I just hoped he would no longer post unsourced wild speculation from Debka and try to pass it off as "news"

Even postroad admits that it is only 2/3 accurate. It's supposed to be a news organization. I expect NYT or Fox News to be at least 95% accurate.

I've read school newspapers that have a better accuracy record than Debka.

Quonsar was just shitting on the thread. He'd be the first to admit it, I'm sure. That's mainly what quonsar does. But, it seems that if you do it enough times, shitting on threads becomes your schtick and you get a free pass.

But, it seems that if you do it enough times, shitting on threads becomes your schtick and you get a free pass.

Saying quonsar is shitting on this thread is shitting on this thread, in a sense. He expressed himself with force. When people express themselves with force, it follows naturally that other people are irritated and they, in turn, respond in force, to which response a response iin turn s made and so on and so on. Ego is not a vanishing resource here. It's very hard, once things start escalating, to head off that escalation--which most people find more offensive than the original offense. As has been said before it's like watching a couple fight at a party or listening to your parents yelling at each other after you've gone to bed..

He may be crusty or offensive at times but he's brought much to the table. It's the people who bring nothing to the table and are consistently offensive who get the boot in my experience.

"yeah, it wasn't really an ultimatum"...So Matt, would you characterize it more along the lines of a UN Resolution? I thought about commenting in the thread about the million Chinese troops waiting to kill us in Afghanistan as reported by Debka back in those days, but why bother? Everyone knows they're as reliable as a 5¢ condom in a $2 whorehouse.

sex is also natural but I don't want you humping my leg on the bus. Knowing the proper place for your "natural" behavior is pretty important and the question may be "Is MeFi now a place where shitting on the thread is okay as long as you're generally a productive contributor?" I honestly don't know. I hate pissing matches and it seems like someone should be able step up to the plate and decide to chill out and not make things worse. When people say MeFi is a boyzone, they don't mean boobie posts, they mean this sort of thing exactly.

I know we don't ban users for mild trolling here. Which means that just ignoring it till the admin deletes the user account won't work. But why do we have to keep rewarding the troll? SpecialK, do you really not get it? He's doing it for attention. He's trying to get a rise out of people who are wound too tight.

It's not going to stop. Not here. But at least don't give him the exact reaction he was trolling for. WTF?

I don't hump legs on buses, never without a green light and it usually takes whacking me on the head with a cast iron drying pan to notice those. Humping on the leg is not the analogy to use--a playground fight at gradeschool, football and war come closer to the mark.

You are right that it's a guy thing--it's very hard for us not to get our backs up and go back and forth. I certainly am not with out sin on the topic.

I don't think you'll ever see conversation as agon ever disappear between men, it's wired in monkey behavior. To use a TV analogy, C-Span is the hope, Jerry Springer the fear and the McLaughlin Report all too often the mean. At least we're not whcking each other with folding chairs all that often.

And Jesus Christ, I'm glad women don't do it all that often--it would be like a society of hyenas in here.

It's just like how I used to get annoyed that every other video on MTV2 was Ja Rule until I started telling myself, "That differently-abled kid's done really well for himself." I envy quonsar's extraordinary ability to make good points in a most expressive and economical way, while simultaneously making us laugh. But I can live with it. His detractors here either don't accept his talent or need more s-p-e-l-l-i-n-g o-u-t. Then when someone is good enough to explain it to them, they're annoyed it was something so simple and commonsensical.

*adopts avuncular, standing by the fireside in dark blue dressing gown, snifter of brandy and pipe in hand*

Perhaps quonsar's deep metaphysical plea here may be better understood by a less sophisticated audience by referring to the words of one of those so-called pop songs so much in vogue nowadays; The Pretenders' "Stop Your Sobbing":

It is time for you to stop all of your sobbing. Yes it's time for you to stop all of your sobbing.
There's one thing you gotta do to make me still want you, gotta stop sobbing.
Yeah, yeah, stop it, stop it.

It is time for you to laugh instead of crying. Yes, it's time for you to laugh so keep on trying.
There's one thing you gotta do to make me still want you, gotta stop sobbing now.
Yeah, yeah, stop it, stop it.

Each little tear that falls from your eyes makes, makes me want
to take you in my arms and tell you to stop all your sobbing.

There's one thing you gotta do to make me still want you
and there's one thing you gotta know to make me want you so.
gotta stop sobbing, now, yeah, yeah, stop it, stop it,
gotta stop sobbing, now, yeah, yeah, gotta stop sobbing, don’t weep, don’t weep…
