Flash Friday Fun on other days April 17, 2003 12:20 PM   Subscribe

Is Flash/Fun still just for Fridays? If no (my vote), can we drop the rather annoying "I know it's not Friday..." and its ilk?

Friday Flash! and of course Friday Flash!

somewhere i have an email from matt saying how much he enjoys blort and what great material we post while noting that of course, it's not mefi caliber material. (and i would agree!) but over this last year i see more and more blort showing up on mefi in less and less time. it's a genuine hoot for me. we had the cat on a ceiling fan weeks ago. i guess we've reached a certain plateau of influence when what we do reflects on mefi. i'm not sure why i'm posting this. no, wait - i'm posting this so i can go "nyah nyah we had it first!" and to say "every day is friday at everlasting blort." but mostly, "nyah nyah!"
:-)

Friday Flash Fun has become descriptive of a type of post, the day of the week is irrelevant.

As a description it works a helluvalot better than the FPPs that have been showing up with no description at all.

For Example

as has been said before, the phrase "Friday Flash Fun" gives the impression that saturday through thursday Metafilter is a serious news-oriented type of place. people have, as rj pointed out, basically come to the consensus that it shouldn't be used, but of course, that's not going to change anything.

making decisions about how things to be is clearly not a good way of affecting metafilter. what one needs to do, apparently, is act. start posting stuff that is "Friday Flash Fun" w/o using the phrase, and other people, eventually, will adapt to it.

(i too, for some reason, am hugely annoyed by that phrase -- it implies that there is some kind of rule against fun links when it's not friday.)

From the same thread:

I have some other things in mind to get rid of the "what is your favorite movie/song/product?" threads.

I'm still waiting for those internet-operated cattle-strength electro-tasers to be distributed.

Also: blort rules.

I live in a community. We have street fairs, holiday decorations, parades, political events and all the like.

I work in a community. We have company outings, (formerly) beer fridays, restaurants we go to for lunch, and a mini-basketball hoop that we sometimes play with during end-of-the-week downtime.

MetaFilter is a community. We have a few in-jokes (many overplayed), popular figures, ways of discussing (and not discussing), and events (AIDS awareness, April fools).

Why in the heck can't we have a fun post friday?!?!?!

And 'learn english' a week later.

While we're at it, isn't there some way to block one word "_Filter" posts, posts that consist of a single . and that "most. tired. ever" meme?

i see more and more blort showing up on mefi

I thought it was more and more April Winchell's Linkapalooza, most of which is, of course, not up to Blort's high standards of low humor.

After **** and MetaFilter - and even before, if you don't feel like chatting and your only objective is a whiff of genuine freedom, subversion and laughter - I think, after much consideration and despite some outstanding competition (all rubbish, hee hee) - quonsar's website is, quite simply, the best on the Web.

Above all because it's amazingly consistent, day after day; is inspired by the genuine anarchist viewpoint of quonsar and madamjujujive - and never, but never lets down a visitor in search of intelligent, thought-provoking fun which is fun even when it isn't.

[If that makes any sense in English]

I'd like to nyah nyah nyah that I had "Learn English" a few days before Blort, most likely because we both got it from Milk & Cookies' latest link section.

My website is the best, and I also have a huuuuuge pee pee.

Is that how you got that gold star?
posted by Space Coyote at 9:07 PM on April 17, 2003

well Stan Chin, I certainly concede that your pee pee is larger than mine! You will have to shoot it out with quonsar though - it looks like a fairly level playing field, but q seems to have a slight head up on you.

You boys! Imagine if dejah, iconomy, me and other mefi women were one upping each other with talk of boob size. On second thought, never mind.

Stan, your site is indeed most excellent - I would recommend everyone go there right now. Do it!

Thanks for your nice words Miguel, you sweet talker you - you make blort sound almost respectable, we must be doing something wrong!

I'm with DBAPaul--it's still "Friday Flash Fun" regardless of the day of the week it's actually posted on. This reminds me of what the old Pogo comic strip used to do with "Friday the Thirteenth." (e.g., someone would mention how Friday the Thirteenth was particularly unlucky this month, seeing how it fell on a Sunday...)

OT: ok. someone clue me in. how did stan chin get that gold star?

Obviously the whole "Friday Flash Fun" tradition grew up because apparently it's okay to overtly waste time on the internet whilst at work on a Friday because it's Friday. QED.

Personally, I think that people should just accept that fun and frivolity are welcome on MetaFilter any time of the week, provided they aren't gratuitous and uphold the guidelines.

I get Friday Fun and I understand how Stan got his star (that should be a children's book: How Li'l Stan Got His Gold Star), but tell me this: What the heck does QED mean? Quod erat demonstrandum? Naaaah.
