Namecalling in MeFi comments May 13, 2003 9:41 AM   Subscribe

This entry seems out of order to me. Am I overreacting? I see why this place gets a bad name sometimes. Rant over.

Lighten up, Mr. Lobster; it can get a lot worse than that.

When you say "Please don't kick me," someone will inevitably kick you. It's human nature.

Nothing like the Internet to bring out human nature...

Consider it a welcome. I might say the same thing to my friends, in the same spirit as answering the phone when one of my buddies calls and I say "Hey asshole!"

It's a joke.

And to answer your question, yes, you are over reacting.

Consensus seems overreacting then! lol

The comments seem pretty pointless and stupid to me. What's up with people kicking the new kid?

{vows to end ones own pointless comments if only purple stars where possible}

topic is raised (an extremely high form of comedic art) and the person whom raised said topic is lampooned because of their username?
what ever happened to mere lampooning of the topic...huh.

the first laugh is seldom the best laugh.

The comments seem pretty pointless and stupid to me. What's up with people kicking the new kid?

where did THAT come from? lets take a look:

1) light humor directly related to one of his links.

2) the obligatory nod to the newb. gentle, good natured. and HE brought it up.

3) a fraternal joke, soyjoy poking fun at himself.

4) i'll grant you pointless on this one. but its his own comment.

5) expression of "love" for something seen on the link.

6) misspelled funny, don't know why he called him a 'loser' but ignatious is not known to me to be much of a nasty sort. we'll let him explain it.

7) kneejerk reaction to being called a loser, hey, we all get those.

8) reminder that ignatious was likely joking.

9) poster makes instructive distinction regarding humor vs. insult.

10) profane, backslapping, 'you're gonna make it after all' parody comment.

so, i just dont see where anybody is kicking the new kid.
and i don't know what kind of deep, thought provoking commentary one could expect a link like this to generate. if anything, it's blort material! (*cough* - and by extension, probably too stupid for metafilter, eh matt? wink wink!) i loved it.

BobsterLobster, come back when someone creates a new ID just to insult you (I'm not going to link to it) – and the boss leaves it there.

"Look, Marge. You don't know what it's like. I'm the one out there every day putting his ass on the line. And I'm not out of order. You're out of order! The whole freakin' system is out of order! You want the truth? You want the truth?? You can't handle the truth! 'Cause when you reach over and put your hand into a pile of goo that was your best friend's face, you'll know what to do! Forget it, Marge! It's Chinatown!"

or alternatively:

Never! Never, Marge! I can't live the buttoned-down life like you. I want it all! The terrifying lows! The dizzying highs! The creamy middles! Sure, I might offend a few of the blue-noses with my cocky stride and musky odors. Oh, I'll never be the darling of the so-called "shifty" fathers who cluck their tongues, stroke their beards, and talk about "what's to be done with this Homer Simpson!"

The "loser" thing was entirely meant as a joke. I'm sorry that it must not have come acrosss like that. When he said something like "it's my first post," I basically thought that he was trying to be light-hearted about the whole thing.

Really, Bobsterlobster, I didn't mean to be a jerk.

And quonsar:

I'm as nasty as I wanna be.

It's not over until it slips off the page. It may not really be over then, but we won't be able to find that out.

"What's up with people kicking the new kid?"

Text of the memo which Matt missed:

"Matt, your userbase is mostly made up of asshats."

But, on a positive note, we seem to have weeded out most of the fuckwits.

Mr BobsterLobster - It was a good post. Your mistake was mentioning it was your first post. But of course there was no way for you to know that. And you did precipitate a rare smackdown from Matt, which is always a good thing.

Yeah - welcome aboard, Bob from Huddersfield! I notice that in the space of a few comments your skin has already added a few much-needed microns of thickness. ;)

You don't get a pint, usually, til your first MeTa callout, which is usually right after your FFPP.

yerfatma: sorry, cut and paste. Actually, if you translate it to german and back to english with google it is:
Never! Never margin! I cannot live that button down lives like you. I wish it to all! Terrifying the depths! Dizzying the heights! The sahnigen middles! Surely, could I unite the blue noses by mine cocky Fortschr1tt and musky smells to insult. OH -, I am never the favourite of the so-called city fathers, to who cluck its tongues paint, its beards, and speak ", which is to be done with this Homer Simpson!"

Thanks Miguel. *downs it*

If I'd known what Stavros had for us though, I would have been content. The rhyming, the rhythm, the three little kittens.

Best.
Insult.
EVER.

I'd like to see asshats and shitmittens added to the metafilter line at cafe press, which, by the way, ought to be added to the etc. page. There's a bumper sticker there now - must have.
