British or personality disorder?

Reading the answers to this question I have to say that I'm a bit disappointed that the nation of 60 odd-million people that I belong to has been reduced to a bit of a caricature here. Metafilter normally does very well at avoiding stereotypical depictions of different nationalities and/or minorities of many kinds, so I'm curious as to why this rather broad brush approach to the British has been allowed to stand without comment or intervention.

In political megathreads, can we please try to be more straightforward.

"punch drunk" is a thing, yeah. I get it. But there's a whole lot of us who aren't in on the cultural jokes. Or the sarcasm. [more inside]

Chests are good, butts are bad, mmmkay? Bingo!

I'd like to know the reasoning behind keeping some posts up while deleting others, especially as it pertains to these particular threads. [more inside]

Are.you.serious?

This is going to be my first feature request on the site. I was wondering if it'd be possible to add a Sarcastic Font tag to our arsenal of HTML when posting. As many of you are aware, it is sometimes extremely hard to convey sarcasm in written text, and I think this would really benefit some people by spelling out when someone is being sarcastic. Here are some examples of its use. Thank you for your time, and just so you know, HAMBURGER jokes are so 2011 (or whenever that was first introduced).

...and HAMBURGER in a sarcastic font represents utmost sincerity

Idiopath on October 20th, 2009: If metafilter supported it, using an absurd font would probably be a better analog. [more inside]

Sarcasm: we haz it (but sometimez we don't "haz" it)

Perhaps a MeFite-created sarcasm punctuation mark just for MetaFilter? [more inside]

AskMe on Cat and Girl

I'm not generally a huge fan of these kinds of posts, but Cat and Girl mentioned AskMe today as part of its is-this-sarcasm-or-double-sarcasm pop culture revue, and my heart filled with glee.

If you believe Sarcasm= Irony, Maybe You're Not Smart Enough to Post Here

How many times do I have to remind you people: THERE IS NO SARCASM TAG IN HTML. [more inside]

Better expressing my sarcasm

In the short time I've been Metactive, I've already had to apologize to 4 different people for not expressing my sarcasm well enough. Care to share your superior methods of sarcasm?

Namecalling in MeFi comments

This entry seems out of order to me. Am I overreacting? I see why this place gets a bad name sometimes. Rant over.

Did anybody else find the wording of this FPP highly offensive?

Snark will be the end of MeFi

It's not the petty insults, it's the rank, disrespectful and pretentious sarcasm that's ruining discussions on MeFi. This thread is only the latest example. As discussions go, its useless. The topic, however, merits a reasoned dialogue. I could cite a few examples in which I've crossed the line. I feel comfortable that I've held my worst instincts in check most often; others have not.

It gets worse all the time. It's now customary among the hawkish set to lead off every comment with a sarcastic jibe, instead of an honest reaction. > >
