Scientology primer host passes bandwidth bill July 14, 2003 10:41 AM   Subscribe

The host of the '70s Scientology primer that brought so much joy to Metafilter and others is passing the hat for an unexpected bandwidth bill: "~50,000 people saw the site, and given that I do not think it is crazy to assume that 210 of them (you) can donate a dollar (just one!) to my cause."

I gave $10. He was being charged $5/gig in over-usage fees? That's ridiculous.

I gave 5 dollars since I watched it a couple times and sent it to some friends.

how much will we have to kick in when he cries about the bandwidth bill he gets for us linking to the page where he cries about his bandwidth bill?

Man, that donation is worth it just for the chance to see PAYPAL *BURP* show up on my credit card statement. Of course, I'm in Canada, so it's actually going to be PAYPAL *BURP*$US2.50@!.&710101034589023014971340671340671-976139761937497134967139467193761971874537486 or something equally delightful and sensical.

I think there should be an easier way of getting stuff mirrored incase of sudden fame. I'd certainly be up for mirroring stuff that becomes popular, as I have bandwidth out the wazoo, but connecting the content with the hosting is rather hard, since you don't know when it's going to hit the big time.

How does one attain this state of being?
posted by scarabic at 1:28 PM on July 14, 2003

1) Use a lot of magic pixie dust.

Or.. 2) Have a couple of your own servers up near a backbone someplace.

#1 is cheaper, if you can do it.

What part of "Don't Link" do you not understand?

I got that foisted on me in a comment on my MetaFilter Birthday thread on MetaLifter. Deleted it. Was totally pissed off. Shouldn't have mentioned it here. Delete it, Matt, I am so sorry.

If anyone else wants to know, can we just call her "Goatse's Sister?"

BTW, where's the MeFi Birthday Party? Did I get un-ininvited even BEFORE this?

I had my innocence removed eons ago by surgical application of Stile Project, Fark, and FilePile

In 1995, I noticed a hunchbacked, sulking classmate was staring at a computer. "Whacha lookin' at?" I asked. "Newsgroups." he said. "Really? Can I see?" I said. Then he said "well, right now I'm checking out alt.binaries.tasteless, so consider yourself warned."

I don't think I could speak for days afterwards. After that painful bout of desensitization, I can pretty much handle anything. But I have to say tubgirl was pretty awful, way worse than the goatse guy.

Yes it was. Is there anyway we can have the person who put that link here taken out and flogged?
posted by timeistight at 4:49 PM on July 14, 2003

He didn't actually put the link here, he just planted the idea in our heads and then warned us not to pay any attention.

Like that was going to happen.

Meanwhile, back at the topic...

I think there should be an easier way of getting stuff mirrored incase of sudden fame.

It's called Bit Torrent.

But don't google for it.

My eyes managed to shut themselves before my brain could fully render the image of tubgirl. Thank heavens. I'm not exactly sure what my eyes saw, but they're saying to just leave it at a cross between a grotesque woman and a vomiting bidet, and are threatening to strike if I ask any further questions.

Thank you namespan for extinguishing any lingering spark of curiosity that may have made me try to find that image.

I'd like to think that no real image could be as vile as those my mind is currently conjuring up...but I've been wrong about that before.

I was in a three-way duel with a couple of friends of mine to surprise eachother with the most shocking photo at random moments, tub girl would have made a good addition. Usually after receiving one of those messages I would go to the hamster dance for a couple minutes to try and regain my soul. Probably why I'm so into pooping on hamsters now, but I'm not sure about that, I'll have to ask the nice man that brings me my pills at 9:30 and 4.

Anyway, back on the original subject, not to sound callus, I mean I understand it sucks for the guy and all, but, if he wasn't interested in showing off his find, why the hell did he post it on the net(scientology boy, not the tub photographer)?

No?
