Brownpau's white pony request September 24, 2003 3:09 PM   Subscribe

I love using MeFi with the light "plain-text" scheme; could it be extended to Metatalk as well? Nothing fancy; just body, .menu { background: white } and I'll be happy.

(Oh, and a white pony.)

I second that notion. Except I want a white unicorn. Oh, and the Metatalk thing ain't bad either.

I'd like a good horse I could call my shiny black bess.

.bess {
color: black;
finish: shiny;
}

Seriously, though, isn't there some way you can apply any style sheet you wish to any page you wish? And if not, why not? That's the pony I want.

In Mozilla, Edit > Preferences > Appearance > Colors, check the radio button that says "Use my chosen colors, ignoring the colors and background image specified".

I don't know what you people are talking about with the "blue" and the "gray". They're fuschia and puce for me.

yeh, ok, so that's sort of a global thing. I too thought there was a way to apply user stylesheets to certain pages, but I can't find it now.

Here's a Mozilla extension that, I think, allows you to set an overriding stylesheet for certain sites. Among lots of other things.

In Firebird, you can do the same thing via Tools > Options > Fonts and Colours. It does horrible things to some CSS sites and changes text colours in some unpredictable ways, though, so I would not recommend it.

Yeah, I've found Opera's equivalent of that basically only useful for sites whose stock CSS makes the page a horrid, unreadable abortion. You need to write the CSS with some sort of idea in mind of what the markup it's intended for looks like.

('Twould be nice to have a choice of the different "special occasion" page designs, though... the MeFi/Google April Fool's one, m3t4filt3r, MetaFiltARRR!!!, etc... are these at least archived somewhere, a la Something Awful's various fake front pages?)

Here's a bookmarklet that will help: Edit Styles. Does what it says on the tin, giving you a pop-up with the stylesheet, applying changes you make in real time. And the changes you make persist throughout the site in question. Unfortunately it only works in Mozilla et al. Oh, and there's a Firebird extension called EditCSS that does the same thing.

Warning: addictive. You may find yourself obsessively re-designing sites for no apparent reason instead of working (er, although that might just be me)

This has nothing to do with anything, but I've been anxious to write "How Now Brownpau" for a while now.
