Spike in Traffic? May 3, 2000 1:32 AM   Subscribe

Is it just me, or has MF traffic spiked recently? Matt, you have the logs, has something specific happened?

dunno, but the pissing matches yesterday resulted in the highest traffic to date. 9000 page views by 1500 people. Yesterday, there were a lot of new signups too, perhaps many coming from a scripting.com link.

I find it weird that more people are attracted to asshole ranting post than genuine informative postings. It must be easier to be hateful than nice for some people.

I think there are way to many comments, there should be a limit to comments, or a threshhold of some kind to set. Also, it can get very hard to read in the longer threads, so maybe some alternating background colors, like on message boards.

I was thinking a few days ago that with the escalating number of members it might be good to encourage people to not comment when there's another cogent commentator taking a position similar to theirs. This notion has its troubles as well.

I say we have some sort of popularity contest, then we could let only the top 2% start threads, and let only the top 10% comment on them! That'd be cool! ER... I mean, blah blah blah conflict stokes the fire of creativity, yadda yadda yadda.

Me, I'm thinking Matt should cut out the middleman completely and just write some code to automatically generate "[INSERT NAME/SITE HERE] sure sucks!" at random times of the day. Then automatically generate "What do you mean, you idiot?!!" as the first comment. . . .

I mean, why wait for the community to do these things, when flame wars are a proven marketing technique?
