Desperately seeking an album from a page that no longer exists June 19, 2001 3:23 PM   Subscribe

Hi all,

I'm posting here because I knew this would be way out of line for a front page post, but I am desperate....

I need to find as many copies of this album as possible, on vinyl.

does anyone happen to have a few dozen laying around? Or any good ideas when I could find some either online or off...? And relatively CHEAP?! I've tried ebay and some cutout companies...ebay is too slow... I've found two.... and cut out places are too expensive... $8.00 a copy!!! with maybe 10% off for bulk.

Its for a good cause.... Sorry if I've ruffled any feathers with this post...but any help would be appreciated.

thank yous,
darkPony

I have no copies, DP, but I do have a burning curiousity:

Why on earth are you trying to corner the market on "Foreigner: Head Games" vinyl albums?

If that's the album you need to find multiple copies of, you are indeed desperate.

However, if you do find someone with several dozen of these on vinyl hidden in their basement, then they're even worse off. :) I can't think of any album I've ever wanted to own more than two copies of.

If it's for art, why not just go to your local record shop, grab a bunch of LPs from the 49¢ pile, run off some color laser copies of the Foreigner cover, and cut and paste?

aaron had a good suggestion but you want originals?, try calling around to record shops in the usa. the net would be a good conduit, well you have probably tried this, good luck.(if it were ELO i know were about 70 can be had.)

"I'm posting here because I knew this would be way out of line for a front page post"

But the etiquette forum is the perfect place for it.

Hmmm...... Since the Metatalk topic is now the general help desk for random questions, I was wondering if anyone knows about a really good Honda service place in San Diego?

y6y6y6: I appreciate your point, but I also appreciate darkpony's point -- if something like this isn't suitable for the front page, or suitable for metatalk, then where should it go?

(Yes, I *know* the obvious answer is "It shouldn't be here at all, then.") But is there actually a place where MeFis can post things that aren't links *within* MeFi?

While our individual opinions/trends aren't really cohesive (herding cats comes to mind) I think the overall gist iof MeFi s a group of people with common interests, or at least a tendency to babble. :) So if someone wanted to ask "the community" for information, what would they do?

Sorry, this is turning into a "What is MeFi and what are its limitations" post...returning you to scheduled programming now.

y6y6y6:Oh, I KNEW I'd get that response... If I had said "Would it be bad etiquette to ask where one could find....blah blah blah?" I might have slipped it by.... Look, I really do apologize, there is no right place for this question... I've just been trying to get my hands on these things for so long, and I just thought somewhere in this community, someone might have some good link to old cutouts or whatever. oh never mind.

aaron: I've tried this. It doesnt feel right, plus when the albums are mounted ( on a cube like framework) you could see the edges of old albums and stuff.... And, cut and pasting just looks icky.

Actually, it seems the best place for this would be on your website. Then you could submit the link/project to MeFi-guy Jerry Kindall, who would then distribute your request/link via his MeFi Projects Mailing List. (The link is also on the main page sideblog). Seems like this is what that's exactly made for.

No, and I don't think there should be. We have nearly 10,000 members, most of whom, I imagine, might need specific hard-to-obtain information on a daily basis. There's just no room for it here.

I'd visit such a site, if it existed. Why doesn't someone start it him/herself?

This is really for Matt to police. Just tossing out my own opinion.

"suitable for metatalk, then where should it go?"

Ummm...... On a suitable site????

"there is no right place for this question..."

Exactly. That would be the point. There isn't suppose to be.

Imagine if we had a Metatalk topic called "Ask Anything." Hundreds of people would then start asking anything. And hundreds of people would start answering. The image of a black hole sucking in time and space is forming in my brain.

What is wrong with keeping Metafilter focused? If we're going to turn it into a copy of Yahoo Groups, then I would lobby you that it will quickly lose the flavor that we like so much.

I hate getting into these sorts of sorties, but I never seem to have the strength to avoid them...

Theoretically, Metafilter would have the same readers in Metafilter Proper, if there were some secondary (or even terciary) Meta-venue for questions/comments 'out of class': ABC-TV does not cause CBS-TV to lose any of it's inherent flavor; K-Mart remains K-Mart in the face of Target stores. There is a stronger argument that a "penned-off group" for posts like this would purify the Metafilter front, by syphoning off any ephemeral posts to a side-blog.

That being said, I know from past experience Matt has a very specific vision in mind for MeFi, and side-blogs of that sort are not part of it.

Another answer may be in order, and perhaps it is in having a created 'sister blog' that would take the editorial onus and server load off of Matt. The question is, who would build and maintain, and whether Matt would allow a sister-blog partnership for sideboard discussions that would include easy cross-navigation between the two sites. That would be Matt's call entirely.

At that, I'll stop; it's Matt's Bat, Ball, and Ballpark, and he's really got the only say on the matter.

Um...there are *other* online communties besides MeFi.

Communties that are interest specific too...like music for instance.

A quick google search would probably yield such a community that would be more suited for DarkPony's question.

darkpony--I hope you've been checking here. If you'd been watching and collecting over the last few months, you'd probably have what you need by now. Of course, ya gotta shell out the $$$.

Of course I also think this is the wrong place to post, but that doesn't mean I can't be helpful. ;)

I would have bet money that this was a joke, maybe a troll, but it seems that Darkpony actually does need dozens of copies of a Foreigner album.
Congratulations, sir, on making a request that has never been, and will likely never be, made again on the face of the Earth.

I don't think MetaTalk is the appropriate place to talk about what belongs in MetaTalk.

Actually, I don't think it belongs in MetaFilter either. Until MetaMetaTalk is set up, the only appropriate way to talk about what belongs here is to hijack a topic on Plastic.
