AskMe is awesome May 29, 2004 2:42 PM   Subscribe

Ask MetaFilter has been a fantastic part of my life, and I look forward to growing old with it by my side. Of course it will mature, and I'm sure that it will never be anything less than an elegant jem. However, I sincerely hope that, no matter what, there will be a way to view it exactly as it is now. Also, we've taken countless bookmarks together, I hope those will always be in the same place so that I can look back on the memories.

For $59.99 mathowie will send you an entire year's worth of Ask MetaFilter for your local browsing pleasure on a high quality Tayo Yuden DVD.
N.B. The above is completely untrue.

yes, the $59.99 part is untrue: with only $34.99 you can get the AskMeFi DVD, your personal 40G @metafilter.com email account (gmail suxxxx!), a Kung-Fu-Mathowie action figure, 2 edible MeFiBlue thongs and an autographed naked picture of ColdChef: all part of the MetaFilterPro Package!

I think he's saying, he has a lot of bookmarks and he hopes that they'll still point to the right place when AskMe is out of beta. I don't think he need fear. Assuming the archives are kept, changing all the paths would be kind of pointless.

No, the real question is, what the fuck is going on here. People typically react with outrage when members post inquiries into questionably-legal practices like the circumvention of network proxies or the distribution of films via the Internet, yet "Which prescription stimulants should I illegally acquire and inject into my rectum" gets a pass? The mind colon reels.

I need a website to grow old with. Is there a section of Salon Personals I can use?

Danelope: yet "Which prescription stimulants should I illegally acquire and inject into my rectum" gets a pass?

You need to reread that thread. The OP doesn't mention prescriptions or legality or rectum in his/her question. I suggested 2C-D, which is not a scheduled chemical in the US. What's the beef?
posted by Gyan at 3:59 AM on May 30, 2004

Kudos for gracefully sidestepping the phrase "where's the beef," which would have only lead to the most obvious, scatological remarks. Would have, at least, if I saw them before anyone else.

You are the very model of a modern scatalogical.

The OP doesn't mention prescriptions or legality or rectum in his/her question.

It was a deliberately facetious statement based on the resulting content on the thread. Allow me to restate:

"Which potentially (though perhaps not explicitly) illegal and medically/scientifically-unproven chemical substances should I consume in order to maintain energy and focus?"

In which case, the answer is obvious: Red Bull.

two possibilities:

a) you are really really really gullible and easily impressed by carbon copy sites in different colors.

b) you are really really really gullible and easily impressed by carbon copy sites in different colors.

Danelope,

in any case, what's to be outraged about?
posted by Gyan at 11:07 AM on May 30, 2004

I am not outraged, Gyan, but Ask MetaFilter threads involving matters of questionable legality have typically been frowned upon by the community, for the purpose of not exposing the Site Owner to potential legal ramifications and/or burning rectum.
posted by Danelope at 11:37 AM on May 30, 2004

Again, what's the questionable legality here?

The chemical is openly available and easily findable on the net. The DEA certainly knows who all have been selling it, in the US, for the past few years. The Federal Analogue Act exists. If these drugs were a significant concern, the DEA would have shut all these labs down. The fact that they haven't, means one of two things

1)The Analogue Act doesn't apply or the DEA can't find a way to shut them down.

2)The DEA doesn't care enough to shut them down. In which case, it doesn't matter. The law matters only if it is enforced. There are hundreds of silly antiquated laws, still on the books. They don't matter.

After a lot of reflection and soul-searching, I'm gonna have to go with b). Final answer.

Ooh, an email address that's down half the time and complains to the sender if they send you an email containing information you had already been sent. Sounds like a winner.

Now an @metatalk.metafilter.com email address...

Eactly fvw. You could have infinite repitition with a MeTa email address...

Speaking of which, does anyone know why there isn't a link to AskMe on the front page?
