Animated Ad August 9, 2004 1:35 PM Subscribe
Has the Bigha ad (here) always been an animated gif? It's fairly subtle (head swings left and right), but it was jarring nonetheless.
It must not be too bad, then, because I must have seen it a couple thousand times before I noticed the movement today.

Okay, it's always been animated, but the little voice whispering "bloodymary bloodymary bloodymary bloodymary bloodymarybloodymary bloodymarybloodymarybloodymarybloodymary", that's new, right?

Yeah, it's a company selling branded silly putty.

That's not "the deal," Matt. Is it a joke or what? Are either of these characters actually paying?

Ooohhh, Silly Putty. I looked through the website for about two minutes last night, and gave up after I simply couldn't figure out what was in the tin. I thought it was a joke that I just wasn't in on.

(I am gonna ride the Mathowie bandwagon until he throws me off into the Pacific Ocean... which should happen about 30 seconds after he sees this)

Hey, don't go dissing the sponsors.
I hope they sell their money's worth in merchandise, and 10 times more. And I wouldn't be shocked if they did.

Jarring? If you consider that jarring, you should use a text-only browser.
I'm serious.
In IE 6 you can turn off pictures by going to Tools/Internet Options/Advanced/Multimedia/Show Pictures. Toggle that off, and never again be assaulted by about 27 pixels shifting colors.
If you use Firefox, then you're smart enough to know how to turn it off.
If you use Opera, you probably have them turned off already, so I don't know how you saw it in the first place.

I don't think it always was moving. I swear to god I stared at it for 2 minutes yesterday trying to see wtf you were talking about. I looked again today and immediately saw him turn his head.

Rusty... that's why I used the word "jarring". After seeing that thing for weeks, yesterday my eye caught movement. But when I focused on it, it wasn't there. Then later I saw it move again, and then it stood still as I stared on it. I'd reload the page and ... nothing. Over and over again. Then, movement. Just to prove I wasn't seeing things, I finally grabbed the image and loaded it in some editing software where I could clearly see there were frames.
If it has been constant movement, I could have ignored it (like I do anywhere else I see animated ads). But the on again off again movement (at a place where I didn't expect to see any movement) stole my focus.
(Oh... I'm not anti-ad. I've placed an order for the thinkum, as much to thank them for supporting MeFi as anything.)
