Would anyone here like a Gmail account? I'm an antisocial bastard, and have 6 to give away. First posted - first served.

Please do this on the wiki. There are 15 or so people listed there who are offering gmail invitations.

why the hell was this posted to metatalk? Matt already deletes all the ask.metafilter posts that are like this. And how is this metafilter related?

Perhaps we could get a sideblog post to the wiki so that people could just go there and we wouldn't have to have one of these threads every week?

Anyone else want one, before this gets deleted?
posted by Shane at 1:34 PM on August 30, 2004

If you're not interested... ignore it.

(sorry if I violated anything here, but just wanted to share the wealth... by the time I figured out how to edit a wiki, I could be finished).

Sorry, I made a typo in my earlier comment. What I meant to say was "Please do this on the wiki AND NOT HERE." Thank you.

How to edit a wiki: scroll to the bottom; click "Edit"; edit; click "Save". You can do it.

How to build a community, part 1: Shout down and tell off anyone who tries to do anything generous. This isn't the place for that sort of behaviour.

Keswick: Probably. Ask Matt.

Heh, damn, no Underroos. I think Matt needs to make a MeFi camera bag with the tagline "We have cameras."

Is anyone else sick of going Google's marketing for them? No? Alright then.

So... uhhh? Seriously, can someone explain to me what the hoopla about gmail accounts is all about? SHOULD I be interested in one? Thanks!

Witty: I'll give my non-geek partner's attitude to the service. She loves it for some of the following reasons:

1. Its easy to use with a very simple interface.

2. It has a 1 gig inbox.

3. It was available with her name: [firstname.surname]@gmail.com, and she has one of the most common surnames in the UK.

4. It meant she could finally ditch her 22 character hotmail account.

5. She didn't have to be near a computer at least once every 31 days to check her webmail inbox for fear all her contacts would be deleted otherwise.

As a brand new user to GMail (thanks davehat), I have to say the displaying emails as part of a conversation is pretty damn cool.

GMail is great for e-mail lists, as it places all messages with the same subject header in a queue, so you can review the entire thread just by pulling up one message.

The search function is nice too, although some people have noted how it could be abused under the Patriot Act, and Google is a little pushy about "Delete? Permanently? No, you don't want to do that! You have so much space, never delete anything again!" Google is really creating an incredible online archive of e-mail that is potentially searchable by keywords like "jet fuel," "manure" and "BOOM!"

The 'Labels' function is cool, too. And I guess it makes you look a little more hip than an "@hotmail.com."

As in, my old email would be archived for anybody to search? Perhaps I'm a bit confused.

oh man, again with the invitations :-p i was dreading the next round... i don't know why but i just can't ignore them, i've got to make sure they all get given away. zarah and i have listed ours (1 down 11 to go) on the wiki - if anyone else wants theirs listed on the wiki but is hesitant to edit the wiki on their own, let me know and i'll do it for you. 'cause we should all be using the wiki and not making more threads about this... incredible irritation that is gmail.

wiki, wiki, wiki !

Anyone Google lets search it. If the U.S. Gov't asks Google and Google says Yes, then a search of all the text in those e-mails has been facilitated, made absolutely conveniently simple, by Google's search function.

What's that, t r a c y?

This listing belongs in the wiki?

You mean this wiki?

I have around 30 invites if anyone wants one. It isn't riches, it's annoying.

(it might be a couple days before I can send any out. I'm only online about once every 4 days.)

Have you heard about the wiki? I always add my gmail invites to the wiki! They're even immediately visible, so you can get instant Gmail gratification via the wiki.
