The Metafilter 3l33t userid auction is up to $70. It might be silly, but it's for a good cause.

I think this goes against nature.

good cause? what good cause? The "buy me a beer when I'm in Sydney next week" cause?

Sorry, I just assumed you'd be donating the proceeds to Jakob Neilsen's hair transplant fund. If anyone needs the money, it's poor Jakob.

Dammit waxy! Sure, the second I'm the high bidder, you go publicizing it... You sore loser, you.. :-)

Matt, I figured it went into the "server fund". Didn't realize that you were using that definition of "server". As in "Hi, I'll be your server tonight. Would you like some company?"

That's a lot of beer by the way...

I feel bad the bidding is so high, and all you get is a stinkin' ID. I'll throw in a free metafilter pro subscription for life to the winning bidder. I was considering also adding "any single new feature of your choosing" but I bet someone would ask for "delete/kill" functions and we'd have madness.

So free mefi pro, which I hope to implement in September.

ah, metafilter. where we moan about the commercialization of america, mourn for those on the less fortunate end of our capitalist class system, and finally give in to the reality that elitism does make us happy, so long as we can pay for it....

So free mefi pro, which I hope to implement in September. Is this the new name for My.metafilter, where you get weather information?
posted by rschram at 3:07 PM on August 1, 2001

Considering how much the MeFi pro would cost to be a member of for life, maybe 85$ isn't so bad for this ID.

Okay big boy, it's time to kick it up a notch.

ESST is coming after you.

that's 3557 in case you were wondering

Ooh, 3557. You are desperate... :-)

Now I kind of feel sorry for you...

You know, this is going to become a mighty long (and expensive) thread if we keep this up for the next 4 days, 6 hours...

You must be that little spanish brat I taught a lesson to all those years ago. Simply incredible. You've been bidding against me your whole life, only to fail now? I think that's the worst thing I've ever heard. How marvelous.

There's a shortage of perfect breasts in this world. It would be a pity to damage yours.

Oh...Oops...Wrong cue...

I'd appreciate it if you would refer to them as manboobies.

Manboobies: One broken link which I'm relieved to find broken...

You know, thinking about it, the right thing to do would be to purge the membership of old inactive users and move everyone down that many spaces...

Well, I guess we know what accountingboy is spending his tax rebate on.

good lord... it's at $127.50... that's just ridiculous.

I paid less than that for my vietnamese girlboy Hun Lee.

Can all sub-1000 users get MefiPro for life? Pleeeze?

How about those who have contributed over 1500 comments?

Where has user number eight been all this time?

Matt, this looks like a fine investment. Somebody could buy it and re-sell again in a year, probably (all things going well) at a profit. They could then buy themselves a condominium and live out the rest of their lives in comfort.

*Trying to spruik more money for Matt*

hmm, I wonder how much 204 would go for, it's a nice even number that's pretty close to 200. $10 at least, right?

I'm offering 3507. Bidding starts at $0.50.

You guys are insane; don't you know the only way to use eBay is to act like you just don't care until about three minutes before the auction expires and then snipe the hell out of everyone else?

just sayin' <grin>

shhhhhhh nuthin'. the last fifteen or so minutes of this auction are going to be more back-stabbing, cut-throating fun to watch than the last game of a 3-3 Subway Series.

Matt, how about also getting to name a section in Meta Talk? Can you ship this ground please.
posted by vanderwal at 11:49 AM on August 2, 2001

Could we please exclude people with feedback less than positive 10? You know they're just a bunch of script kiddie wannabes that have no intent of ever putting their money where their mouse is.

hey matt, when does that "i'm taking the proceeds and running off to australia and there's no more metafilter for a few weeks" hiatus start exactly? i'm just thinking i could schedule myself some additional projects & things with all of that spare time...

I am looking at this as an opportunity to tell my wife... "Honey, today I bought the number 8".
posted by vanderwal at 2:52 PM on August 2, 2001

hmm, I wonder if Matt makes enough money on this, will a new tagline will show up:
"Brought to you by the number 8"

Looks like the bidding is stuck at $135.00.
posted by ljromanoff at 6:16 AM on August 3, 2001

E-bay sent me an e-mail saying I was out bid, then 13 minutes later sent a note that the bid had been retracted. This is quite strange since the bid history did not catch this or the change from $130.39 (no idea where that came from) to $135, which is what I bid. Hmmm.

But, this is all for the greater good of MeFi and the beautiful number 8.

This might be because I attempted to outbid you, but made a techically unallowable bid first (not at least $2.50 more than the current bid), which would have been auto-retracted by the system.

I'd really rather have 7, anyway.

Finally, somebody upped the kitty. Now I can make my donation to the MeFi Amazon Honor Society.
