what it looks like to non-members is that their current online community seems more like what they thought metafilter would be when they first tried joining. monkeyfilter started out as sort of a mefi-in-waiting, for folks to hone their posting skills until matt opened the floodgates. but it didn't stay that way. monkeyfilter is a smaller community than metafilter, but it isn't a metafilter wanna-be and hasn't been for a long time. the different group of people who post there give it a different vibe than mefi. actually, many mefites are also posting to mofi, and a lot of those who started on mofi are posting here. i started there, joined here during the Great New User No-Limit Scripting Screw-Up earlier this year. i like both sites for different reasons. there remain those who are firmly entrenched in one or the other and feel protective enough of their home turf that they display their loyalty with snarky comments like "i wouldn't join mefi if you paid me" or "those mofites are dorks". neither sort of comment is in the least productive but both make you feel more a member of your current clique.

personally, i'm glad to be involved in both. you who don't read mofi might be surprised at the number of mefi FPPs i first saw in the lavendar - mofites are finding some good links out there sometimes well before they hit the blue. be happy that some there want to contribute here, as it might give mefi a chance to stop being the "All PoliticsFilter, All The Time" thing it seems to have turned into over the last few years.

fresh blood! good for everyone.

and we are supposed to care... why exactly?
a community created exactly for people locked-out of MetaFilter is hardly made of fair observers.
now that their members can join here, MonkeyFilter will become even less populated.
it's a small community there, no wonder people are supposedly nicer to each other. I'm sure that in Bumfuck, Indiana, pop 310, people are nicer to each other than in New York
so what?

I'm a monkey come over.

Mainly because every once in a while, I read a thread, and feel the need to answer a question that's posed, either in the Blue, or AskMe, and have been frustrated by not being able to do so.

But I'm sorry to say it, the MonkeyHaus still gets the better posts, and seems to have the better community nowadays. Here's hoping the new blood helps here!

Well, it wasn't hard to see that label coming for this site. And its not just localized to monkeyfilter either. There have been some working very hard everday for the last year or so trying to push Metafilter in a hardline direction. And it looks like they almost have won.

I am eternally hopeful the new people will be different and we can right the ship and bring it back to an interesting site.

no, the Italian equivalent of the much-used "Bumfuck, Indiana" is Canicattì, which is an actual place by the way.
also, don't mistake me for anti-Hoosier. I'm a Larry Bird fan, after all.

nitpick: a more precise spelling is "vaffanculo", two f's
posted by matteo at 10:21 AM on November 18, 2004

matteo - not so sure. some mefites (as i already said) have joined monkeyfilter today. because things over there are not mefi. that specifically seems to be the reason some people like it. myself included.

i don't think it's going away. far as i know, very few mofi users who were able to sneak in here the last time membership was open have stopped visiting the lavendar.

(see, the reason some folks live in small towns is because they like small towns, not because they couldn't afford a place in the city...)

on preview: seth, if you're looking for more friendly interactions then you want more mofites here. personally i hope it helps.

Horses for courses. MoFi may have started up as holding pattern for wannabe MeFites, but by now it's a different community in its own right, with a different tone and different obsessions and in-jokes and yadda yadda yadda.

I see no reason why any of that should change with our nice, shiny new sign-ups. Now anybody can go to MoFi for good-natured fun and quirky links, and go to MeFi for in-depth conversation, issue-focussed links and, er, macho posturing. Bonus!

MoFi = Canada
MeFi = U.S.

I have dual citizenship. Sometimes when I go over there, I think, "Can't we forget about Them and what They do for five minutes and just appreciate what we've got going here?"

Perhaps it's a holdover from waaaaay too many English classes devoted to the subject of Canada's cultural inferiority complex.

I think most MoFites these days would argue with your choices, given the good ones we still have there (and the fact that *lots* of us joined in April!)

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Matt. (You did funnel lots of us by the way - broken script in April! Sorry...) The rest of you - I wonder if you're aware how many of us Monkeys have been walking amongst you for a while now. There are enough dual citizens that I think it's pretty rough to get all down on the other filter. MoFi started because people wanted to join MeFi, but now I like my two logins because they are different sites with different qualities and offerings. You think people who registered at a site because signups here were closed don't read here? Your remarks (monkeys sure would not have read them as "teasing") came through loud and clear. Just like you read their insults about you on MoFi.

Was that a slow day, or are [the monkeys] really so dull that a comment that I barely remember posting is generally worth a thread?

And so the tedious circle continues. Your insults here perpetuate it, even though they're funny.

"There have been 657 comments since your last visit"

I've stopped reading books. I've stopped watching TV. I've stopped going out. Looks like the next thing to go will be having sex. Dave's going to be so devastated.

Orange Clock,

I see from your profiles that you don't have your email address listed. How about listing your email address, so you and Mayor Curley can continue your discussion by email?

Pfft - seriously - No regular monkey is truly upset about The Hon. Curley's comments from anytime. It's all good. If'n you two wanna pissfight here, that's ok, but they's no worries.

*puts Mayor Curley patch on sleeve for next season*

What petebest said. The thin-skinned few whining about what the Mayor said about us are in no way representative of Monkeyfilter. There's coolness in both camps - and bitchiness, too.
