a couple of the n00bs are taking advantage of their soapboxes December 6, 2004 12:31 PM   Subscribe

Self-linking in comments has been tacitly condoned, but a couple of the n00bs are taking advantage of their soapboxes. 1, 2. Perhaps it's time for a meta-nudge in the right direction? Just sayin'.

Those two mentions are ok. The music one was kind of gratuitous, and it would have been nice if he described how he tried to follow basic rules like Merlin's to make it (so that it was more on topic), but I am always on the lookout for CC music sites, and found it useful.

For people that also posted stuff on their blog, that's cool tool, since it's totally on topic.

Eh, neither of those made me blush.

I'm going to start a callout about the phrase "just sayin'"

self links in comments (ie; on topic) were always allowed... no?

The just sayin' part was to soften the blow for the inevitable callout backlash.

OK, back to studying.

yeah, as long as they're on topic. Like anything, it can be abused and someone could just be posting junk to get traffic. That music example is kind of close to the mark.

Strikes me that the music thread isn't the best use for AskMe. I thought we were supposed to say away from questions for the sake of discussion, which this one comes pretty close to.

(Not that you should take it down, Matt -- it's something I'm interested in. I'm just sayin', slippery slope and all.)

D'oh! you got me!

I felt shady posting it and said i was sorry but i couldn't help it...and i agree i should have been less vague and specified that i had a minimal interface non-flash site oriented toward downloading the goods...and it did feel appropriate enough.

I'm really trying to be respectful and useful as i can. i've been lurking here for almost two years, and i got an FPP in me that's dying to get out but i feel like i should still wait a while.

but now i need to figure out if there's anyway to get Id3 tags on my stuff without downloading and re-uploading everything cause i am certainly an offender in that area.

Let her rip!

Worst case, we can metabate for a few dozen posts. You get one a week, so why not get this week right out of the way?

I'm sure it's okay to make posts like that. I've made every noob mistake imaginable so far, and I haven't self-linked, so it must be okay.

31d1, the intention to play fair goes a very long way in getting cut some slack. And you're intentions seem honorable.

Just make sure you have the FPP home by 11 or I'm calling the cops. And no lookout point stuff either.

The 31d1 example seems slightly smarmy, but a lot less "woo hoo lookit me, I'm on a famous message board!" than the softlord one.
