Self links are like wire hangers: None. Ever.

Self-links are always forbidden. Always. Without exception. My question is: why? [more inside]

Self Link?

Or are we just sick of self links? [more inside]

How close is "close"?

This thread was deleted for being a link to the poster's friend's site. The FAQ includes material produced by "close friends" in the self-link category. Does this mean we can't post anything made by people we know? [more inside]

priyatam

Aww man... Priyatam was the man. His UG Krishnamurti links were the best things I have ever seen on mefi.Wasn't permanent bannination a little harsh? Damn Jess - why you gotta be so gangsta? How about banning me, and letting him come back?

Self-linking

Smells kind of self-linky to me: 1, 2.

what then?

If one (with? without? permission) contributed several jokes to two of Judy Brown's joke collections: Squeaky Clean Comedy and The Comedy Thesaurus, but links about it in a FPP, what then?

Just a heads-up.

This user's first comment is a self-link that has no bearing to the post at hand. Just a heads-up.

Penalize Self-Linking

Metafilter is not doing enough to penalize self-links. Pile-ons are not a deterrent, as they only provide affirmation to offenders who believe there is no such thing as bad publicity. No doubt Mitchell Rose of Red Red Rose Pictures is already patting himself on the back for a jorb well done, and despite the deletion of his spam, he has still succeeded: previously deleted threads are still indexed by search engines, thus continuing to provide incentive to perpetrators even if their malice is detected and hidden from the front page. I suggest adding a robots exclusion META NOFOLLOW tag to the head of any thread which has been deleted.

a flagging option on MeFi Projects

This—combined with this—makes me wonder if there needs to be a flagging option on MeFi Projects.

That's right, a self-linking double post.

What do you do when you successfully self-link? Why, you do it again a month later. That's right, a self-linking double post. Afrooz, I must salute you, and your remarkable chutzpah.

Selflinking crossposting snafu

The spectre of self-linking once again rears its ugly head. Allow me to present Exhibit A - "The clueless reviews the Mac Mini", submitted on MacSlash by StormBear. If it may please the court, here also is Exhibit B - "The clueless reviews the Mac Mini", submitted in the blue by user #3411, alias StormBear. Ladies and gentlemen, the prosecution rests.

a couple of the n00bs are taking advantage of their soapboxes

Self-linking in comments has been tacitly condoned, but a couple of the n00bs are taking advantage of their soapboxes. 1, 2. Perhaps it's time for a meta-nudge in the right direction? Just sayin'.

Slight problems with spammy selflinks in comments.

I don't want this to be construed as bullying the new folk, but... [as usual, more of my astute observations and keen insight are contained within]

self-link, with a twist

This post is a self-link, but with a twist ... the poster is currently in Iraq and is apparently part of the unit that captured Saddam Hussein. Is this post simply a violation of the rules that should be deleted? Or is it the 'exception that proves the rule' -- the fact that he's a unique witness to history trumping one of the few hard-and-fast MeFi rules?

Self-linker sets new record

Who needs textads? A new world record in self-links has been set by the publisher of Sound the Sirens, Billy Maulana. He's gotten seven self-links past us.

A double request: dragging entire threads into Metatalk and provisions for self-linking.

A suggestion for you, Matt. You might consider adding some easy way for you to move topics lock, stock and barrel, comments and all, from MetaFilter to MetaTalk. Then politely leave a link behind saying you've done it.

And having an enormous ego and desire for self-aggrandizement, I think you should have a section here in MetaTalk for people to post things about their websites. I have some things coming up I wouldn't mind the entire universe knowing about (as opposed to both people who come to my site), but I won't be so rude as to drop it into MetaFilter.
