Callout of Responses to Miss Lynnster's First Ever Post December 20, 2004 6:39 PM   Subscribe

This is my first MeTa thread calling someone out, but this just seems out of line. A new member posts a good link that is not news/politics/religion, and someone has to find something to whine about. Good job sticking up for yourself, though, miss lynnster!

Maybe there was too much of a snarkfest, but if miss lynnster had actually been reading the site, it should have occurred to her that people don't post "this is my first post" here on MeFi--and when they do, they can expect to taste the bitter tang of the snark.

The only thing more annoying than someone pointing out that it's their first post is someone pointing out how annoying it is that they pointed it out.

Actually, I lied: there are far more annoying things, but it's still more annoying to point it out.

I disagree. People do it quite frequently with very little ill effect on the site. I'd just prefer they used a smaller font for the addendum. Besides, that way every time a newbie posts something good I can say to myself "I knew there were good ones in the lot" and quietly sip my cognac in the darkened recesses of my sprawling countryside manor.

...froth, froth, froth...

What about those who point out how annoying those who point out how annoying someone that...

Yeah, that's pretty annoying, but what I think what's really annoying is when someone gives what may be some valid advice or criticism and just throws the word "fucking" in there. I'm not against swearing here or a lot of other places, but it just turns some good advice into an insult and an invitation for a snarkfest.

Let's go back to pre-Chatterly euphemisms here on MeFug. I'll start--

It's a fuggin' invitation for a friggin' snarkfest. So f*** y'all.

Yeah, but filtered through Frank and at least a decade; yet still able to piss everyone off!

Anyway, it seems to me that calling attention to one's first post is a polite way of asking for constructive criticism; if the post sucks, then let 'em have it, but this post was good, at least according to those who actually commented on it.
posted by TedW at 7:11 PM on December 20, 2004

Also, all the "fucking" is only appropriate given the subject of the post. Not to mention: fist fuck...wrist watch...crisco.

Bullshit, I can tell she meant well, but miss lynnster deserves some of the blame for the so-called "clusterfuck." She made (at last count)15 comments in the thread. She at least tried to get things back on track, but she also linked to her own blog in the thread for no apparent reason.

I thought it was a pretty good post, but...oy!, Whatta trainwreck!

When you walk into a new school, you can either sit down and try to blend in, or be proactive with a friendly, "Hi, I'm new. I hope we get along." It's called "introducing yourself" and it's something that people do in a polite society. Both approaches are valid, and I don't recall anyone in school telling me to shut up when I introduced myself.

Well, some people did -- we called them bullies and we tried to ignore them. On the intarwebs, we call them trolls, and boy are they hard to ignore.
posted by o2b at 9:23 PM on December 20, 2004

o2b, no school I ever attended had over 20,000 students.

Those introductions could get a bit tiresome, no?

How about those of you who hate the "first post" announcement do this: leave a comment saying something like "Welcome to MeFi, newusername. Just a note, though, for other new users - please don't announce that it's your first post, since with so many new users this gets very repetitive."

A comment like this is much less likely derail the whole shebang, no?

What I find hilarious is that it's almost never newbies who flaunt the rules to shit in a thread. I've only been reading this site for three years, but I seem to recall that shitting in threads is a no-no and that Metatalk was created for such a purpose. Do the rules only apply to people with user numbers above a certain value, or has hypocrisy become the order of the day?

Because it's really hard to listen to someone who violates the rules to bitch at you for violating the rules.
