i just had a realization: my nick is idiotic. can i change it?
i've only been a member for a week, and only posted about 3-4 comments.

Sorry Silky Slim, it turns out you've posted 7 comments, and the max you can post and still change your user name is 6.

Kidding. Actually, Matt doesn't allow user name changes.

Yep. Sarge wanted to change his name to "silky.serenity".

Just 'donate' another $5 for a new account and then you'll have Silky Slim as a backup.
posted by page404 at 4:32 AM on February 8, 2005

Yes. Get a new account. It costs $5.

Gained some weight, have we? Not feeling so silky now, eh? Get out on that Thunderball field and run some laps around the gun circle.

"my nick is idiotic"

Hey, I realized my Judy was idiotic too, but I still kept her around for a few more years. ;-P

i guess i'll have to stick with this then.
though apparently "Cheapy McBastard" is more appropriate.

Silky Slim, having a cool name isn't important. Being able to have an account you can connect to is your real ticket to entering MeFi.

It's better to have an idiotic nick to a forum than an idiotic password.

But Silky, you can quote Top Secret!

Your user name just became infinitely more cool in my book.

I like your nick. Silky just sounds so soft, smooth, and nice. Keep it.

I'll second that remark, seeing as Doohickie is as uncool as it gets.

smart dalek: care to elaborate on that?

Sure. These days, you'll find just about anything inside someone else's desk drawer.
Never happened to me, though...

Now that is a username waiting to happen.

Until I got a college address a few months ago when I started school, my email address was:

j_j_o_h_n_s_t_o_n@yahoo.com

"Such a great idea!" I thought. "I get to have my name, and on a yahoo account!" I thought. "I can't believe it hasn't been taken!" I thought.

Well, there was a reason. Blech.

"'Such a great idea!' I thought. 'I get to have my name, and on a yahoo account!' I thought. 'I can't believe it hasn't been taken!' I thought."

I've had my usual username (first initial, middle initial, last) on Yahoo for a long time. I don't actually use that email account for anything. I do get a lot of spam in it. I guess that's what you were referring to? What's interesting, though, is that I get mail intended for a variety of people whose names are "K(something) Ellis". There's one guy who mails junk to his whole family; I've tried to email him but it bounces. One email seemed kinda personal and important, so I wrote the sender back and explained that she'd sent it to the wrong address. She sent me a nice email thanking me.
posted by Ethereal Bligh at 4:07 PM on February 8, 2005

'Such a great idea!'
Not what he's referring to.
To get an idea of what a stupedously stupid idea it was, try phoning a friend up and telling him what the email address is.

reminds me of the reason they named slashdot.
"haitch tee tee pee colon slash slash slash dot dot org"

Oh. Oddly, I filtered out the underscores when I read that. Weird. Or am I still not getting something?

EB, try typing it out every time you need to fill out a web form asking for an e-mail address.

(My sympathies, koeselitz!)

On topic: I quite recently had a naming issue as well. Due to PayPal technicalities, I (was/am) not able to sign-up for a new account on my own, so when I saw that someone was giving away a duplicate account, I jumped at the chance. A lot of related issues came to light, though, and after a while using a recycled nick just didn't sit right with me anymore. After much consideration, I accepted an American friend's offer to sponsor my registration. Now, THIS is me.

Besides, MeFi could use another $5, right?

No.
posted by Secret Life of Gravy at 8:29 PM on February 8, 2005

That's frightening. I went to bed and then dreamt what EB is trying to say. Bligh, the point, I think is that the email address with the underscores is the literal email address. It's not the email address with underscores added to confuse spammers.

Silky, what nick would you choose if you had the chance to change it? Maybe if it's extra-clever, Matt will give it to you. Or more likely, we can at least have a few minutes of humor. Lemme guess, you wanted Rough & Thick, right? I'm right, aren't I?
posted by Civil_Disobedient at 1:34 AM on February 9, 2005

Rough & Thick: I think I once saw a magazine by that name.

I can't wait for our next $5 sock puppet to show up with that nick. I will enjoy reading "posted by rough&thick".

After reading this thread I went to bed. Waiting to fall asleep I thought of a few new user names that I might like to buy:

Jojo, the dog-face dog
Baby Jebus Wept Cream
Talk to the Hand Over The Loot
