I don't see a MetaFilter HELP page anywhere...and I think some is needed.

For example, tinkering with Preview shows me that some HTML is accepted, but as it looks odd there apparently are restrictions that I can't find. I do see that a simple blank line is fine, and a Paragraph tag breaks the MF formatting.

Don't screw with the formatting. Everythings nice and neat as it is. There's a reason why there are restrictions.

It doesn't sound to me like he was trying to vandalize anything. Sometimes a paragraph tag is what you want -- and if you don't know that you can't use one...

The only rule you need to know, as far as I am aware, is that a line break in the text entry fireld translates to a line break in the formatting, unlike normal HTML-in-a-browser, in which a line break translates to a space.

This means that when you're using any block tag (DIV, P, BLOCKQUOTE, H1-6, HR, PRE, and lists, if you follow the normal HTML practice of starting them on a new line, you're going to have TWO or THREE new lines when it's formatted (the actual new line, a blank line if you insert one, an the new line inserted by the block element.

So P tags are absolutely fine to use--though you don't need them here. BLOCKQUOTE is a better example. For the formatting you want you have to go
previous paragraph text<BLOCKQUOTE>blockquote text blockquote text </BLOCKQUOTE>following paragraph text
(all on one line), and it will work fine. I did it here.

Weird that my entities didn't get converted... oh yeah--here's another thing you need to know: if you use entities, don't use preview.

OK, this explains why there was a huge empty space at the bottom of my post on the Fourth Turning. I used paragraph tags.

But whoever edited the post to fix it then mucked it up worse by deleting half of the link text. :-) Could someone fix that, please? The words "Fourth Turning" are missing.

How about help on changing passwords? Or is that impossible?
