Mail art, anyone? July 6, 2005 11:46 AM Subscribe
In my thread about mail art, Jon-o had a great idea. I'd love to organize something like this. Is anyone interested?
Not sure, but I think interrobang started one already? There may be time to get in on it - I didn't read the whole thread.

The last one we did just wrapped up on Monday but if people want to get in on the next one, just send email to mefimailswap at gmail. We're looking for a place besides that closed MeTa thread to plan the next one, if anyone has suggestions.

Okay, I've uploaded mine to Flickr. Wasn't as hard as I thought it would be.

has it appeared (on flickr)? mine didn't - you have to upload a whole pile, apparently. so i sent mine to wonderful wonderful jessamyn, who is wonderful for doing this, in a wonderful kind of way, wonderfully.
i'm currently clearing out a server that could be used (via a dyndns address) for small projects like this, but at the speed i do things, it will be months before it's ready, and i suspect commerical things like blogspot .com are better anyway. but if it would be useful in the future...

I can see mine there, andrew cooke. I originally sent them to jessamyn, too, but I felt guilty about wasting her time on it, and just did it myself.

Cool, thanks you guys!
Should have done a search for mail art, 'cause of course y'all are cool enough to have already thought of this.

hmm. well i did upload mine. i thought that was the reason (needing to upload much more). maybe it's just that flickr hates me? i'll try uploading the originals too.

They were all supposed to be mailed by something like the 15th, right? Should we start setting up the next swap?

Actually, I was thinking more of actually using the post. With stamps and everything. I don't have a scanner so I feel like I'm at a disadvantage...
So, are we actually going to mail these things to each other?
Since graduating, I've been in a real slump. This'll be a great excuse to get working again.
I'm excited :)

These were sent through the post, with stamps and everything. The Flickr account is just documentation.

Awesome. Count me in for the next round. Where do I post my address and get a list of destinations?
We're having an exchange, right? We're not just sending these to people we already know and then telling each other how cool it was, are we?

This thread details how we went about it last time. It's sort of up to Jessamyn, at this point, but I'm sure someone else could take over, via theora55's new site.

I just have everyone organized via that gmail account [tagged by world regions] and the password could be easily shared so we don't 1) redo work we did sending and sorting email addresses 2) risk putting people's mailing addresses someplace on the live web. Anyone want to take over the next round? I'll be happy to pass the torch.

This is really cool! I remember wanting to do this awhile back in some other MeFi thread but I didn't know if anything ever came of it. I'd like to participate in the next round for sure. I'll send an email to the gmail account and start checking out all the links in this thread to catch up. Yay!

interrobang, most definitely yes. I got a wonderful postcard from Kortez yesterday.
jessamyn, I'll take the reins for the next round if someone hasn't already offered.
Incidentally, I wonder how many recently flickr'ed folks (such as myself) have tagged their images but aren't approved for public display (yet?) so they aren't showing up at mefimailswap. We might need a way around that as well if people want to brainstorm.

super safetyfork, check your email, I gave you the info. Thanks!
As I understand it, the public display for Flickr basically waits til you have some small set of pictures uploaded, I'm not sure if they need to be photos [Flickr is pretty serious about it being for photos but they'll allow other types of things] but there is a small probationary period. Maybe new Flickrites can all upload the same set of tame filler photos so their mail art can become part of the public pool?

Alright a couple of people from this thread are in, but I don't know if I saw everyone in the gmail inbox who said they were down for it in this thread. So, send that email with your name and address to mefimailswap at gmail in order to get in on the action.
I'm also of the mind to think that past swappers are still in unless they email that address and opt out. I've never moderated something like this so if that's a collossal bad idea the smart and sassy folks should speak up.
The big question is deadline, no? Let's roll it a month forward unless people have other ideas. So I think last time we were all shooting for in the mail by the fourth of july. How's the first of August? (That makes the deadline for sign ups soon so swapsets can be established).
Also, theora55 was kind enough to email me an invite to the blog mentioned up thread which is at mefimailart.blogspot.com and so I can move some of this stuff there if people will check it. It'd be good if I can get a read on whether or not that's a direction to go.

This is cool. I'm in.
But I still want to put together a notebook and mail it from person to person, each adding a sketch or poem or a whatever (hell, sculpture's fine, if you can glue it to the notebook.)
Anyone interested? Maybe in a couple weeks, when I'm more settled, I'll post a thread and ask who wants in.
It's just so damn fun, ya know, imagining this notebook making its journey around the world and back, then to be scanned and displayed on the 'Net...

E-mails to swappers have been sent, if you're sure you sent in your address and the e-mail doesn't seem to arrive, then notify me at mefimailswap at gmail and I'll look into it.

It'd probably work best if it were one or two pieces forwarded on. I have a feeling recidivism would be a bigger problem with this than with the CD swap.
