Iowa blog copies MeFi comments? July 30, 2005 2:36 AM Subscribe
WTF? About halfway down this page, the comments start to get a little, er, familiar... Anyone know what's up? (And yes, I did find that by searching for "ASMED".)
It's actually pretty strange from my very brief look. Why would someone (I'll assume it's singular) adopt a half doz. MeFite member names to comment in an Iowan weblog?

if it was linked here, people likely went there to leave comments as themselves, perhaps even pasting their comments from here to there.
No big deal, nothing funny going on.

That's the thing... I really don't think I posted anything to that site.

Actually... I know I didn't!
Here is the MeFi post. The comments are IDENTICAL.

It's only a dozen comments or so... but it is more than a little strange that they are in the exact same order, posted by the exact same people.

Here's the thread that the comments were cut-and-pasted from, whether by the original posters or by more mysterious forces. It's not a slurper, since there are a good number of comments that didn't make it to the Iowa voice. OTOH, assuming that the Iowas voice runs on CST, they were all posted about five hours after the originals.
Seems a mite fishy to me.

Someone at the Iowa blog must have seen MeFi in the logs, checked it out, liked some of the comments, and "imported" them.

DON'T THEY REALIZE THAT ALL POSTS ARE © THEIR ORIGINAL OWNERS?!?!

bizzare. The author of that site has now appoligized to "that metatalk site", so it dosn't seem like they did it. But the only possible motive would be to make your own site seem more popular.

Some people say that Metafilter rehashes the same old arguements so much that it becomes repetititive.
Why sould we be surprised that something the comments be re-hashed somewhere else? Just because they are identical? By the same posters?
Metafilter parodies life, life imitates metafilter.

So it looks like Matt's explanation doesn't cut the mustard. I wonder if he'll have another look in this thread. It's true that you often see MeFites comment at sites linked from MetaFilter.
