Bookshop vs Amazon
Hey, have we thought about switching up our affiliate links (at least for books) from Amazon to Bookshop? It’s apparently a platform for indie bookshops set up specifically to keep them afloat and to break Amazon’s stranglehold over online book purchases. [more inside]
Amazon screws up bag promotion... again!
18 years ago, Amazon messed up a promotion and sold $350 cameras for $40 – engendering a legendary MeFi in-joke.
On Monday, they did it again – adjusted for inflation!
★ I help fund MetaFilter!
Did you know that there's a Chrome extension that will let you add Metafilter's Amazon affiliate code to every Amazon link you click? It also adds the tag every time you navigate directly to Amazon. It works on all international Amazon sites and a couple of other Amazon-related sites. [more inside]
Metafilter affiliate linking plug in?
I had to recently sign into a different Chrome account and I lost my plugins/extensions. One of which was the one that automatically added the Metafiler affiliate link when I visited Amazon. I cannot for the life of me find it again despite numerous site and google searching attempts [more inside]
Prime Day support MetaFilter
Don't forget to consider using an affiliate link for MetaFilter today & tomorrow if you are shopping Amazon Prime deals. [more inside]

Alexa, play Mefi* music
While bemoaning the fact that there's not an Amazon playlist or station that scratches my itch for eclectic music, it dawned on me that Mefi Music hits that particular sweet spot for me. Which led me to wonder about the feasibility of integrating Alexa with Mefi music. It seems it's been done for iPhone using the RSS feed, so I'm assuming doing something for Alexa is not totally out of the question. I'm curious as to what people think of the idea in general, and also any thoughts on technical implementation. [more inside]
Amazon links for other countries?
I swear I've seen this asked before, but a cursory search didn't turn up anything so I'll ask again anyway just in case. I spend way too much money on Amazon - but in my case, amazon.ca. I'd love to give you guys my 4%+ affiliate income. Can you please setup amazon affiliate accounts in other locations than the US so I (and other non-USians) can give you guys free money? Since I can't use my own affiliate link, I'd much rather give it to metafilter than whatever other random referral link I clicked last that currently owns my cookie.
Amazon WP plugin?
The awesome Amazon affiliate plugin, which was kindly written and published by a mefite several years ago, seems to have gone defunct. Are there any good alternatives? [more inside]
omg shoes
I swear there used to be a shoe (I think on Amazon) that people always recommended and linked to for inexpensive flats of many colors needs. I can't find it. [more inside]
Holiday Commerce Reminders!
It's that especially gift-giving time of year, so don't forget: you can support your fellow community members by buying MeFite-made merch at the MeFi Mall, and if you're buying stuff at Amazon you can be sure to visit using our referral link to help support the site itself. [more inside]
Quick FanFare Updates
We made a couple changes to FanFare today. We added a show, movie, and podcast search to the front page sidebar. For movies we added links to buy or watch a particular movie at Amazon (if it's available). And we updated how movies are posted. [more inside]
Mefite Amazon reviews of The Dress on Vox's famous website
I just wanted to give a shoutout to naju and NoraReed for having Amazon reviews quoted in this article from Vox about The Dress.
If other mefites were also featured, I apologize for not recognizing your username.
Recent Amazon Links not working
A Metafilter Labs project, Recent Amazon Links, either isn't working or nobody has posted a link to an Amazon product for a couple of days, which I've never seen happen before. As a gadget addict, I'm wondering if something's broken or are other things being prioritized? Is anyone else experiencing this?
Announcing MeFi Labs
Today I wanted to unveil a new subsite featuring some experiments with our data called MeFi Labs. [more inside]
outragetalk
I'm really disappointed that this Amazon thread was deleted. I saw the deletion reason but I think that the discussion that was happening was totally worthwhile, and though the FPP was a bit thin, we see much thinner posts that stand. I don't think just dismissing it as outragefilter is fair, if for no reason than it shuts down a great discussion that could have happened. I'd like to see it opened back up. [more inside]
Thread disappear? Halp?
Can't find a very recent post about kindle allowing amazon and / or publishers to see exactly how people are reading books - can anyone point me in the right direction? Am I just going crazy?
Metafilter in my bookspam? It's more common than you think.
A bookseller on Amazon is selling content including mefi as part of a collated book. This looks suspiciously spammy, and I assume nobody at mefi has actually authorised this. Is this something that Metafilter Networks cares about?

Buying a Pony Off Amazon
Is it possible for MetaFilter to make money off referral links to amazon products? That is, when someone posts a link to an amazon product, the site automatically turns it into a referral link so Matt and Co. can make a little bit of money off the link.
Amazon links gone wild.
Amazon referrals need some fixing. [more inside]

Amazon code for WP?
Hey Matt and pb: You know that sweet-ass bit of code you guys have that scrubs any link to Amazon and inserts your affiliate ID? It would totally rock if you would release a version of that as a Wordpress plugin. [more inside]
Amazon's Askville
I got an email from Amazon regarding a new question-asking site called Askville. So far it doesn't seem as nice as our own AskMe, but I thought I'd bring it to everyone's attention.
We have box sets.
We have box sets. Slashdot has the goods on Amazon trying to give flashbacks to MetaFilter with their new and improved pricing shenanigans in which they deliver two box sets to lots of people for the price of zero, wait a five days (crossing over Christmas in the process), and then demand that people return them unopened. Now they've begun charging people's credit cards for what Amazon decides they should have paid.
Amazon's New Askville Service
Just a Meta Heads up. Along with Google and Yahoo in the "Ask" pool....
Amazon is stealing our internets too.

Why can't I add this to my wishlist? (Metafilter on Amazon.com)
Affiliate Marketing for Amazon
URL mangulation for fun and profit? I posted in AxMe an amazon link and metafilter has automatically mangled it to contain a metafilter referral token. Personally, I think that modifying content that we post is a bit rude; am I alone in this?
Is MeFi a member of Amazon Rewards?
When posting reference links to Amazon for books & such, does a click-through result in some pittance flowing back to Number 1? In other words, is Metafilter a member of Amazon Rewards? If not, there is no benefit of using an amazon.com link vs. for example a bn.com or powells.com .
I'm proposing a small change to amazon URLs

Amazon associate account for Metafilter
What if there were an Amazon associate account for the benefit of Metafilter?
MeFi Affiliate IDs?
This thread gave me an idea. Could we set it up so links going to amazon or iTunes contain a MeFi affiliate id, so when visitors buy songs or books, some money could go to a MeFi general fund for hosting or sending mathowie on vacation or whatever?
Amazon referral links in posts
Amazon referral links in posts. grabbingsand caught another user linking to Amazon with his own referral code in a post. How do people feel about this? A personal referral code is (IMHO) obnoxious, but what happens when people start slipping in referral codes to political sites? Is there even any way to catch this?

metafilter in books
Whoa! I dropped "metafilter.com" into amazon to try and find that alexa site ranking thing, and found out the site appears in 14 books.
How about a little meat to go with that book?
Amazon donation bug
Clicking on the "Donate" link brings me to the Amazon donation page, then kicks out to the home page. I'm using MSIE 5.5:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 5.5; Windows NT 5.0; T312461)

So how about a Pledge Drive?
So how about a Pledge Drive? My local NPR station is begging for money again, and I was thinking - you know I'd rather give my $1/day (why that's not even enough for coffee) to MeFi. Currently the donation kitty is at $3,597. I bet we can get that up to $4,500 in no time. What do you say?
nothing more than a crass attempt to get a few bucks
Why do people persist in doing this? tsarfan posts a link to an Amazon page showing that they're selling sex toys, ostensibly to incite commentary on what Amazon and other e-commerce outlets will/need to do to become profitable. In reality, however, it seems to be nothing more than a crass attempt to get a few bucks from MeFi's significant readership by making the link include his Amazon referrer code. In the words of the immortal Michael Stipe, "I call bullshit on that."

Linking to Affiliate Codes
Hey Matt - I don't know how easy this would be, but how about a script that looks at links as they're posted and if it recognizes a link to an Amazon product (or any of 100s of others), it would automatically reformat the link with the Give MeFi 15% back if somebody buys this product off this link character string.
Then you could just sit back and rake in all of the subversively gotten gain.

Matt's in the news
Rock-star Matt Haughey is in the news again (with gratuitous photo). This time, in a New York Times article on the Amazon honor system (penned by Ironminds' Andy Wang).
MetaFilter reaches $1000 on Amazon
Hey, since MetaFilter just reached a thousand bucks on Amazon (plus some unknown amount on PayPal...) don'tcha folks think Matt should take Kay out to dinner or something, as his reward for doing all this work?
I know that would be at least as exciting as another 128MB of RAM or whatever...

Amazon Affiliate?
Quick cash for Matt, or his evil twin Howie: I just made a bunch of links to Amazon, and while doing so thought, “If only Metafilter was part of the Amazon affiliate
program. Then he might make a few pennies off my reccomendation.” Couldn’t hurt anything but your karma.
