About Unconscious Ableism Around Mental Health
We have had previous Metas around ableism and conflicting needs here on the grey. And we've gotten better on how we discuss mental health. But as someone living with a mental health condition, it appears that many discussions that implicate mental health on Metafilter are still touched with a lot of stigma: I would like us to do better still. Tiny AskMe
In the spirit of the Bad at Life thread, how about a "tiny fixes" thread? Things that are too embarrassing or not worth burning an Ask question on. [more inside]
Mental Health Check-In Thread
As eluded to by the most recent podcast, it has indeed been a rough week. In cities all over the US and the world, the hits just keep coming, and not just from COVID-19. I know personally that it is taking a toll on me and I didn't see another thread that wasn't location-specific, so I am opening this up to anyone and everyone that needs someplace to vent and share their joys and struggles as the world convulses under the weight of fascism and pestilence and the ongoing fight to eliminate both. Be kind to each other. We are all hurting.
How are you doing? Are you ok?
How are you doing? Are you ok? Just wanted to check-in. Be kind. Stay safe.
Chat: "This house is clean."
As we move through cities, towns, landscapes, some of these places become "haunted" by lost loves, great moments gone by, pain endured while there, and so many other things. Tell me about your hauntings and whether or not the ghosts are still there. [more inside]
Parenting Kids with Mental Health Issues....filter
Over the years there have been a number of AskMe posts about parenting kids with mental health issues, and some of them were written by other people! Which leads me to believe that there are other parents on Metafilter wrestling with the practical, social, and other challenges of raising kids with mental health challenges or diagnoses. I'm certainly not finding the community I want around this elsewhere, so I'm looking to Metafilter. I wonder whether there's an interest for a group of parents who have these struggles, to put heads together, problem-solve and hold space for one another. [more inside]
MetaHappy
There is quite a bit of serious and depressing going on right now: U.S. politics, sexual abuse/assault/harassment in Hollywood, etc. I thought it might be good to have a place to just post happy things. Share something that's made you happy. A photo of a pet. Tell us about a good piece of cake that you just ate. Or maybe you went for a long walk and connected with nature. Whatever it is, just something happy, to remind ourselves that we'll be ok and we'll get through this, whatever that may be. Love to all of you.
modern culture/stress/depression/mental health... something
I'm sure I saw a post here a while back about modern culture/American culture/the recession/something related to that and its relationship to mental illness. It implied that American culture or Western culture or something like that caused mental illness. I've looked through related tags and can't find it; it's possible that it was a comment and not a FPP. Does anyone remember this?
Speaking of mental health...
I remember reading either a post or a comment that listed some sources for, I believe, free online counselling services. Can't find the post or comment in question. Does anyone kmow where it is? It was probably an askme.
OCD is, like, a real thing.
October 8-12 is OCD Awareness Week. I think this is as good a time as any to talk about an issue that MetaFilter doesn't handle very well. [more inside]
You kinda can't just get over it
I've noticed that in posts dealing with OCD, anxiety, depression, or other related mental health issues (most recently this thread, though maybe that's not the best example) there often seems to be a pretty dismissive attitude on the part of a number of commenters. What's up with that?
The Schofields on Discovery Health tonight
If you've been following the saga of the Schofields and their schizophrenic daughter, Jani, you might be interested in watching the hour-long TV documentary, Born Schizophrenic: January's Story, which airs tonight at 9:00 pm on Discovery Health as part of the station's "Psych Week" promotion. Has anyone here "gone crazy"?
Has anyone here "gone crazy"? Has anyone been a normal, functioning person, and then been diagnosed with a serious mental illness? When did you start to notice, and what was it like when you finally realized what was going on?
