Has any more thought been given to a MetaSpace for creative writing? As in a help-me-improve-this zone? Not a Penguin-type wiki by any means--simply an impromptu writers' workshop. I'm assuming AskMe is absolutely inappropriate for that sort of thing, and that it's out of scope for MeFi Projects. MeFi is a nice demographic for this kind of thing, BTW, as it seems to consist mostly of snarky articulate bastards. Thanks.

Writing challenges, anyone? Would MF respond well to a weekly short writing challenge, perhaps posted on Fridays? Example challenge: Invent a new urban legend (in 50 words or less). There are no prizes, no scorekeeping, just for fun. Yes? No? Maybe? Try it?

The format of Ask Metafilter questions is still something that bothers me a little. To my mind, this is the ideal question style. It takes up five lines, but all the necessary information is expressed briefly on the front page. Next best thing: a post can't be compressed into a reasonable length, but judicious use of [More inside] whilst still giving enough information on the fornt page gives people an indication of how much help they can likely offer. This is ridiculous, however. Five lines occupied on the front page, of which only one word is of any use. The [More inside] then takes us to a statement of the question in - quess what? - only three lines. I think people should spend a little more time posing their queries so as to make the Ask.me front page as useful as possible.

I have a theory about my own laspes in grammar: whenever I'm applying text to paper, I can easily iron out my flubs with a high degree of accuracy. But once I begin typing onscreen or with a typewriter, my proofreader's eye is more prone to falter.

I suspect this is due to the differences between horizontal and vertical perception; while focusing upon the words as they are produced, it seems that anything beyond a 45 degree angle triggers off an odd left/right hemispherical conflict. But it would be just my luck to have an "shielded" LCD screen for my web work.

Has anyone else notices any similar paper/screen elevatory quirks as they write?

Surprised this hasn't surfaced here, but Dennis Mahoney has written a "Write A Better Weblog" article. He makes some good points, some of which many (myself included) MeFi'ers could stand a lesson in. And, you've gotta love the great Hemingway quote.
