Communicating Wordless Appreciation
the “.” is what we use in posts that memorialize people who have passed on as a way to signal “I’m at a loss for words” and it also signals “I’m here”. Is there also a use for a signal we can use in everyday posts that signals “I don’t have anything to add as a comment but I totally appreciate this”? [more inside]
An improvement to how obituaries are done?
It might be time to consider how obituaries are posted on the Blue. [more inside]
Bring the JoePa fighting here, y'all
"We're not going to tell people not to express negative feelings here, but if you must bicker about them, please do it in MeTa." [more inside]
RIP Elizabeth Edwards
This is where we discuss the Elizabeth Edwards obit thread. We've done this a few times before, I think.
Loss for words
Why do people post comments that consist entirely of a period? [more inside]
George Tiller Died and Let's Talk About It
About the George Tiller murdered thread:
game warden to the events rhino wrote this quote, which is attributed to Mark Thomas:
"The problem with anti-abortion extremists is that their very existence disproves their point." Huh? [more inside]
Obits done right
I just wanted to commend WCityMike for his outstanding obit post on Natasha Richardson, and commend the mods for opting for a post that gets it right, rather than simply getting it first. [more inside]
realjanetkagan (1946-2008)
Science fiction writer Janet Kagan, who posted here as realjanetkagan, died Friday after a long illness (COPD).
cant just search for "."
Morbid question I know, but here goes... I wanted to peruse ALL of the threads in the history of MeFi which are what I'd affectionately refer to as virtual wakes. Is there an ideal way to do this beyond just the obit tag, and how might one do it efficiently? [more inside]
James Brown obituary: tripled in sixty seconds
What does the dot mean?
i've seen this in a few posts on the blue and the green, this one most recently. why are people commenting with just a . ?
Tagged!
Someone added tags to my post. I'll wear the 'obit' and 'obituary' but the '.' has to go. When I try to delete it i get "Looks like you're trying to delete tags fromto the wrong post. Go ."
Obit Guidelines
The Kirby Puckett obit thread has attracted some rather distasteful snark about the propriety of discussing "minor celeb deaths." Are obit threads inevitable? Should they be?
What does the dot mean?
Why do people post "."?
What exactly is the . in people's replies? I used to ignore them, but when I saw a dozen or so in the Nipsey Russell thread I just had to know...
...is a cock
I want to second the .l. proposal. it would save a lot of people a lot of typing.

There is more info on her site, and a news article. She will be greatly missed.

What does the dot mean?
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what does posting a single period (.) as the only text in a respons mean?
The blue is good lately!
Just a quick thumbs up to the MeFites - skimming the blue reveals a large number of posts that are, a. reasonably interesting and b. well supported with lots of links. I feel like Mefi has been consistently stronger of late, perhaps fallout from the 8/1 contest? Anyway, just wanted to spread some love.
Is it okay to use a dot as a bookmark?
Is it no longer acceptable to leave a comment with simply a period - "." - in a thread so you can keep track of it via your profile page? I still see it happen in the blue but don't see it often in the green, and it now seems one of my comments like that was just deleted in the green... I don't want to piss on anyone here about that, just trying to figure out if it is cool to do it or not.

What does the dot mean?
What's with the dots? Am I missing a really obvious tradition/in-joke?

Watching Threads
How much flak will I catch if I start using "." to mark threads that I want to track on my "My Comments" page? I ask because there are several interesting threads that I want to monitor but in which I don't necessarily wish to post a message.
Does the dot mean RIP?
Does . mean something like RIP?
What's the deal with the dot?
What's the deal with people posting a comment whose sole content is "."? Example here, but I've been seeing it more and more. Perhaps I missed out on some kewl new meme, but it just seems like lazy, bandwidth-sucking, "me too" ego stroking.
Why do people post periods in obit threads?
I've looked in the FAQ and elsewhere that I can think of, and I'm only asking because another, more longstanding Mefi-ite asked me if I knew the answer, so maybe I'm not the only one who doesn't know. What's the deal with posting a period on threads when people die? Does it refer to something specific? Does it just mean "speechless?" Is there a thread that this sprang from?
Whats up with the dot at the bottom of the page?
not really a bug, butâ?¦Whatâ??s up with the dot at the bottom of the page? And how come itâ??s blue in MetaTalk? (Maybe that counts as a bug.) I know where itâ??s linked to, but why? Enquiring minds wanna know, or at least mine does.
