Reconsidering the rule against friend-linking on the MeFi front page

We're gonna try allowing friend-linking on the front page of MetaFilter—that is, linking to stuff on the web made by someone you are friends with or have a personal connection to. Come on inside and I'll talk about why, and lay out some expectations and guidelines. [more inside]

MetaThanksgiving

It's Thanksgiving in America, a day to give thanks, spend time with family, friends, & loved ones and share a warm meal. 2018 has not always been the most easy of years to live through, I thought it'd be nice to have a place to share thanks, to acknowledge that we made it another year on this planet, that we did it together. I'm thankful for my family, my friends, my partner, and all of you. I'm thankful that MetaFilter exists. Cheers.

MetaCheers

Tell me about that place 'where everybody knows your name'. Maybe it's your local coffee house or a diner or a bar or the local yarn barn, whatever it is, wherever it is, this is the place where people know your name when you walk in the door. Maybe you have a place to sit that is always reserved for you. You might even have a coffee mug that only you use, or maybe it's as simple as knowing the entire staff. Tell me about this other family, this other home. Happy Wednesday friends!

Say goodbye to gman

As some of you may know, former Toronto Mefite gman (Gabe) has been battling cancer for the last several months. Its been a long, hard fight, during which no stone was left unturned in the search for his cure, taking him from Ontario to the U.S., to Paris, and on to Heidelberg, Germany, then finally back home to Canada a few weeks ago. His wife and friends sent out an email this weekend, and with their permission, the message has been adapted and presented here for Mefites who knew him: [more inside]

Metatalktail Hour: Family Jargon

Good Saturday evening, MetaFilter! This week, Too Ticky wants to hear about the "expressions or jargon are used only in your family or friends group -- Bonus points for stuff that no one else would understand." This kind of question is straight-up my jam so I look forward to giggling for the next several hours!

Decent Activity

Hey, so way back when, I wanted an "LJ friends" sort of view of MetaFilter – something that would let you see all of your "friends'" comments on MetaFilter, regardless of the number of favorites. I remembered that in the last few months and put together a Chrome extension, Decent Activity (thanks to Ian A.T. for the name!) that shows all of your mutual contacts' comment in reverse chronological order. So, if you are also interested in that sort of view, there it is! [more inside]

how to host a successful meetup when new in town

Hello all :) I would like to post a meetup event. I am new to Halifax (Nova Scotia) and several AskMeFi responses suggested this as a good way to make friends. I would like to know the behavior Metafilter participants expect of the "hosts" ... More inside ... [more inside]

Can I link to my classmates' MySpace Music pages?

I study popular music, and needless to say I go to school with some pretty amazing musicians and song-writers, many of whom have MySpace profiles and websites with their songs on them. [more inside]

a friend of a friend wanted me to ask y'all.....

This post brought up a question for me. It isn't unusual for us to see AskMeFi questions posted by a member for a friend/spouse/workmate/whatever. How do we feel about that? Are we taking bread out of Matt's mouth when we use our account for someone who isn't willing to pony up the $5? And, does it feel different to help a non-member as opposed to one of our co-member-mefits? Not that I personally see it (as it happens now) as a huge issue, I was just curious as to the "how to manage an online community" philosophy bit of the question.

YOU ARE TEARING ME APART LISA!!

Previously covered on the blue, The Room will be showing at Chandler Cinemas, May 15th at 11pm. If you haven't had a chance to see this fantastic trainwreck of a film, now would be a great opportunity. I'd like to host a meetup/pre-film party at my house starting around 6 ir 7 if any AZ Mefites would be interested. [more inside]

How close is "close"?

This thread was deleted for being a link to the poster's friend's site. The FAQ includes material produced by "close friends" in the self-link category. Does this mean we can't post anything made by people we know? [more inside]

how come people are always asking questions "for a friend"?

Ok, here's a question about AskMeFi questions: how come people are always asking questions "for a friend"? Is it that they are REALLY asking for themselves and pretending to ask on behalf of someone else? Or are people really that helpful? Am I a total jerk for thinking that if one of my friends wanted to post a question to AskMeFi I would tell them to create their own account, it's $5 for pete's sake? What piece of the puzzle am I missing here?!?

IRL, do we introduce other MeFites as friends, acquaintances, or what?

I was out at Jillian's in Boston yesterday, and I saw another MeFite there who I recognized from a previous MeFi meetup. Thing is, I didn't remember her real name, and I'm not sure that she'd remember mine. Should I have said hi, and if so, what would be the rules on having friends of MeFites meet each other? Do we introduce other MeFites as friends, acquaintances, or what?
