SF to Japan virtual walk continues
Howdy, folks. As some of you may recall, there is a virtual stroll (amble, arch...ery, ramble) from San Francisco to Japan going on. The first IRL listing has expired. The new IRL listing has dropped us to 3 participants from 11. That is fine but perhaps you meant to join up to log your walking (skipping, etc.) time for fun and forgot. Or perhaps you never heard about it. I am here to say there is still plenty of time to participate in the soon-to-be-legendary Peripatetic Persistent Pirate Puffins' Pacific Peregrination (2). Join us!
MetaFilter Club on Strava?
I was recently looking to add MeFites on Strava to give myself a bit of extra motivation, but noticed that only 20 people have Strava listed in their profile. So, being the proactive guy that I am, I put together Team Metafilter over there and am hoping some of you would like to join up with me. I am a runner, but cyclists and others are more than welcome. Go team!
Another FPP subject drops by to say hello
So we learned about Eric Strand in this post as the crazy person who woke up at 3am to run the Grandma's Marathon course in Duluth backwards before turning around and running it forwards with his son and a friend. What made his video so post worthy is the gosh-darned cheery good time he was having as he did this.
So, he dropped by to thank us and to let us know he's training for the Leadville 100.

Thanks for the perspective
It all seems so clear now-- I had to share this comment of pure wonderment, I'm still smiling. If you've ever needed to really understand how far a distance is, behold the answer within. [more inside]
Metafilter Runs - Challenge
It's been a while since our last post, so I thought I'd remind folks about the Metafilter RUNNER+ group. Everybody's welcome to join in the challenges, and you don't have to have the Nike+iPod kit anymore. The February Challenge was won by Slarty Bartfast, who racked up more than 150km! I've just launched a new challenge for March/April. Get running! [more inside]
October running & walking challenges
The podium of the MeFi September running challenge is as follows : sequential (257k), caution live frogs (184k) and middleclasstool (156k). Sequential apparently could not choose between running and walking, in the walking challenge getting the best of shinypenny/longdaysjourney (242k) and fluffy battle kitten (51k).

Metafilter runs in August
We're near the end of the month which means Metafilter run 5.0 for mefites with the nike+ kit is almost over. I'll post the final July standings in this thread in a couple of days. As always, if you want to take part in the next mefi running challenge, post your nike+ screenname in this thread, and I'll send you an invite. (FAQ : yes, it only works with the ipod nano; no, you don't need nike shoes) - (Previous challenges : 1.0.,2.0.,3.0.,3.1.,4.0.)
However, we're a little bit in a existential crisis. Some fine mefites joined the running challenge, but proved to be formidable long-distance walkers, crushing all the other running competitors distance-wise. How do we keep it interesting for everybody? Separate MetaWalk challenge?
July Running challenge
The current MeFi running challenge is in its final days. I'll post the final results in a couple of days. I don't want to jinx it, but I might actually win this one...(Previous challenges : 1.0., 2.0.,3.0.,3.1.)
We're already gearing up for the July distance challenge. I've sent a new invite to the current participants. If you've got the nike+ sports kit for the ipod nano and want to measure yourself against the dreaded metathletes, post your nike+ screenname in this thread, and I'll send you an invite to the challenge.
Strap on your running shoes!
MetaFilter Runs v.3.1 is nearly finished, and it looks like ajr is going to take out the speed title. Congratulations, ajr! There seems to be a consensus that the distance challenges are more motivating though (especially for those of us who are decidedly more tortoise than hare), so pj_rivera has proposed an ongoing series of monthly distance contests. The June one is just starting, so please list your Nike+ username if you haven't been issued an invitation yet.
Metafilter Runs v.3.1.
Web-goddess regained the Mefi distance running title (previous challenges : 1, 2). Amazingly, she racked up 77.21 kilometer in 14 days. Silver and bronze medals go to AJR (76k) and Sanjayafan (75k).
During the remainder of this month, we'll find out who's the fastest mefite (speed challenge over 5k). Previous participants have been invited to this new challenge via the Nike+ site. If you've got the Nike + Ipod sport kit and want in, post your Nike+ screenname in this thread.
Metafilter Runs 3: The Reckoning
So, it's been done and it's been done again. Is anyone up for doing a third one? I just got an ipod nano for my birthday and picked up the nike kit. I'll have the shoepouch shortly. Anyone want to do a May competition? I haven't created a formal one yet, but I think I can figure it out. I also figure I will be more likely to actually run if I am competing against someone.
Is anyone interested? It seems to have been successful the last two times...
MetaFilter runs (again) on nikeplus
NikePlus is a site which allows people who own the nike running gizmo for iPods to compete on the net. After being narrowly beaten by the swift and nimble web-goddess in the first edition of MetaFilter Runs, we want to settle the score...
If you want to compete in the next edition, put your nike+ login in the comments below, and I'll invite you to the challenge. (I've already sent an invitation to all the challengers who took part in the first edition.) Oh yes, the winning distance in the previous 'most miles in 30 days' was 54.9 miles. Pretty decent for a bunch of out of shape geeks... The challenge start next monday (3/12) at 12am CET.
Where's that spring-loaded running shoes post?
Am I just stupid? Neither the MeFi Search nor Google's site-specific search are yielding the thread on the russian spring-loaded running shoes that help you go thirty miles an hour.
Did I just imagine that they exist? Or can someone else find that thread?
