WTF Matt?

Just because Number 1 should not be exempt from callouts, let's just say that if I had posted that I would have been called out here on MeTa in milliseconds. I think you shouldn't abuse your position as Number 1 to post stoopid shit on the front page.

I figured it would be better to post my protest here on MeTa because I don't want to interrupt the sublime discourse on the Blue.

If you wanna post stuff like this, GYOFB.

Er. Maaaaaybe someone would have called you out. They would have been pretty badly overreacting, if they did. People can and do post really stupid, silly things to the site now and then, and it either gets deleted or not, based on flagging and in-thread reactions.

I think you're reading way too much into this.

I thought it was funny. If someone else posted it, I would have said "that's hilarious" in a comment, not delete it. There is goofball comedy stuff on MeFi all the time and we tend to delete only the unfunny stupid and offensive types of comedy.

I liked it and I really don't see why people would get their panties in a bunch over a single youtube link anyway, as long as it's funny and/or interesting. I'd rather see the one link, than someone try to tack on a bunch of extraneous bullshit just so it wasn't a single youtube link.

The only vaguely good point about it is that it demonstrates the proprietor of Mefi is OK with shitty one-link puerile posts, and thus should be linked and brought up again as an example any time another such post is flagged or deleted.

posted by puke & cry at 5:36 PM on January 26, 2008

This callout is predicated on the idea that matthowie has abused his status as admin, superuser and the Alpha Male of this site to post something dumb - a one-link youtube FPP, and it's just not true. It's certainly a stupid link, but it's funny (unlike a link that makes fun of Alzheimer's patients). It's a grey area, but, Christ, Metafilter is the primordial breeding ground of Internet memes, for goodness sake. A link like this is what this site is for. But it had to be funny, and it was indeed a funny, funny one-link YouTube FPP post, which will probably gain popularity across the Internets in the days to come, thanks to matthowie and the good users of this site.

"Metafilter is the primordial breeding ground of Internet memes"

Bullshit. Slashdot, certainly. 4Chan, unfortunately. Metafilter is too cliquey and antagonistic to outsiders to breed memes that spread beyond its own blue walls. Populism is sneered at here.

"This callout is predicated on the idea that matthowie has abused his status as admin"

Bullshit. This callout is predicated on the fact that matthowie submitted a shitty one-note YouTube link that everyone fell over themselves to praise in a servile manner, when it can be shown that other similar links submitted by other users have been piled-upon and deleted.

Humor is subjective. Claiming it is funny is not a valid argument, as humor is subjective, and other one-link posts of similar comedic quality have been deleted.

"which will probably gain popularity across the Internets in the days to come, thanks to matthowie and the good users of this site."

- I would hope this comment is sarcasm as it is exactly the kind of submissive brown-nosing that should cause the gorge to rise.

- feathers unruffled. You haven't seen my feathers ruffled. I am making a point. I quite like vulgar humor, but in the past I've been disappointed in the snobbery often displayed here when presented with the like, & I'm taking the opportunity of bringing it up. OK? Or would you rather censor me?

"Eh. He just got her from Monkeyfilter, so he's probably just reassembling old rants from there."

- Thanks for the perfect example of cliquey, holier than thou masturbation that makes Metafilter often so turgid and unpleasant. Less of that and more of the vulgar laughs (without snarkery, which I doubt would be possible) would be a breath of fresh air.
posted by Henry C. Mabuse at 5:53 PM on January 26, 2008

Claiming it is funny is not a valid argument, as humor is subjective, and other one-link posts of similar comedic quality have been deleted.

And yet, claiming it is not funny (and therefore somehow suspect) is similarly invalid, and other one-link posts of similar comedic quality (insofar as we can make a comparison, given the subjectivity you're hanging your position on) have also been well-received and allowed to stand.

This really is a matter of selective memory. Stupid/silly posts are a bit of a crapshoot—sometimes they're badly received, sometimes they're lauded, sometimes it's a mixture of both—but they are certainly not universally reviled, and arguing that they are pretty much undermines any credibility this kind of objection has.

What's the matter with a pack of fawning dogs? Do you tell those dogs, "stop fawning, I can't stand it?" If you are not one of those fawning dogs you stand stoically and say to yourself, "I am not a fawning dog." Otherwise, you sound like you want to be a doggy too. And aren't the little doggies cute! "Weird, I don't see anyone in there saying "HaHa! This is funny because it was posted by Matt! The funniness of this is greatly enhanced by him having been the one who posted it!""

I am compelled to continue commenting to say that this statement is staggeringly dumb. A first grade student could tell I was inferring motive based on other threads, compared to this one and authorship. Please don't be so deliberately obtuse. It's another example of trying to defend the subject when my argument is thoroughly sound.

I may well be completely wrong in my interpretation, but the argument itself has weight.

So you acknowledge that people could reasonably expect it to be funny, but you object to the idea that people could be responding positively to it for reasons other than fawning? And you've cross-referenced the positive comments in that thread with consistently negative comments from the same users in other materially similar threads, to eliminate the reasonable possibility that thread commentary is self-selecting among the thousands of members who comment on the site on a regular basis?

Your arguments don't support your conclusion any better than they support the negation of your conclusion. I don't know why this is the axe you feel like grinding, but it's not making a hell of a lot of sense and it seems an awful lot like you're just trying to pick a fight.

I mean, it goes to show how much emotionally you've invested in the site when you do that, and several people here are accusing me of getting my knickers in a twist! The ad hominems and non sequiturs fly, to the point where people start pointing out my own metaphor, as if I didn't mean to make it.

Is my point valid or not?

Under normal circumstances, the post would have been shit-upon and deleted - most likely. Because it's from matt, it appears to get a free pass. It doesn't surprise me, I just wanted to point it out. I can't possibly take any call-out seriously that doesn't include a threat to, at the very least, cut off a limb if the post isn't taken down. If you are going to do this, do it in style, Henry!

"Humor is subjective. Claiming it is funny is not a valid argument, as humor is subjective, and other one-link posts of similar comedic quality have been deleted."

SO MUCH WRONG. That humor is subjective does not mean that there are not consensuses or that all humor is therefore equal, or even that the default is deletion for funny things. Further, if your argument is that humor is subjective to the extent that claims of quality can't be predicated upon it, you cannot say that posts of similar quality have been deleted.

"Thanks for the perfect example of cliquey, holier than thou masturbation that makes Metafilter often so turgid and unpleasant."

If you're so special, why aren't you dead?

A first grade student could tell I was inferring motive based on other threads, compared to this one and authorship.

And anyone with a decent college education could tell that such an inference is really going out on a slim and unsteady branch. You don't have special access to the motivations behind others' claims that the video was funny.

The only way you could realistically conclude that all those who say it's funny are doing so as sycophants would be to have that same video posted at another time by another person, with the same users commenting in it. If in that case they boo and hiss, then you'd have reasonable proof of nauseating ass-kissing.

but the argument itself has weight

Not really, in my book.

"It's Saturday night, there hasn't been a MeTa thread all day, Henry is a self-proclaimed "internet performance artist," and you are all being played like a fiddle."

Shit. Rumbled. It's a fair cop, but society is to blame.

and you are all being played like a fiddle.

Uh huh. Would everyone who wasn't verbally abusing Henry for the pure unadulterated joy of it please raise your hand?

Since Matt's been surfacing less and less on Metafilter since the Dynamic Duo took over more of the front-end, day-to-day tasks, any additions - no matter how lame - from him are welcome.

It's funny to see you jump and dance and attempt to have a go at us for presenting our opinion that you're a bit of a watered drink.

I watched it thought "meh" but as I hate comments that go "meh" I didn't post.

I certainly see that there is a possibilty that people will laugh at it I mean the Umbilical Brothers have made a career out of being "funny".

I DL'd it. The Missus is asleep in the next room so I'll probably listen to it tommorow morning.

Under normal circumstances, the post would have been shit-upon and deleted - most likely.

Nope, not even that far, and asserting it repeatedly doesn't make it so.

Matt's heard from Doohickie, who was kidding and clearly wasn't trying to start this kind of shitheap. Henry, find something else to do with your evening; bizarre axe-grinding is bad enough, but admitted bored-at-home dramarama bullshit is worse yet.
