Request: Google Sitemaps for MetaFilter to improve search quality.

I always figured maintaining a sitemap that had links to 45,000 threads would be a bit cumbersome, no?
posted by mathowie (staff) at 12:20 PM on October 14, 2005

Take a look at the documentation
You only need to update it once every few hours. Generally you generate a simple XML file with each URL, the time it was last modified, and how frequently it should be crawled.
posted by Sharcho at 12:32 PM on October 14, 2005

Yeah, but I'm saying even still, it seems crazy to create a file every few hours that contains 45,000 lines of data in it. I guess I wish I could say "just check the pages over a month old once and these active ones every couple hours" instead of creating and handing over a multiple megabyte text file.
posted by mathowie (staff) at 1:13 PM on October 14, 2005

I really don't see the crazy part here.

There should be a last-updated column for each thread in the database. Even if there isn't, a simple JOIN query once every few hours shouldn't take very long.

Let's assume the generated file will take about 5MB.
* Disk space is not an issue.
* Bandwidth isn't an issue (5MB*6 times a day=30MB daily bandwidth). You'll save much more bandwidth because Googlebot won't be crawling pages that haven't changed.
* CPU time isn't an issue (generating an XML from a simple SQL query should take seconds at most). You'll save CPU time because people won't be using the resource-intensive MeFi search engine.

Documentation sez: Sitemaps may reference, “no more than 50,000 URLs and must be no larger than 10MB [uncompressed.]” That might be too tight for a single-file sitemap for even the blue alone. They suggest using an sitemap index file, which may reference no more than 1,000 sitemaps.

Might make it slightly less trivial, though this tool is still in beta—they may up the quotas later on.

I suppose you could have separate, per-tag sitemaps and reference the 1,000 most popular tags via the index file.

But then, wouldn't it more effective sure ensure that web server supports “conditional get,” and reponds with 304 appropriately? It seems that Googlebot support that?

That characteristically afflicts males of about 50 years of age, and since gram doesn't look a day over 49.5, I am sure he can be cured.

At the next reunion of the longboat survivors on the deck/patio of gram's loft, we will help him by drinking consuming all the goodies in caddis's gift basket - that is if IIHAA has not polished it off. This is what friends are for.

But then, I shrugged and laughed at yhbc's story and saluted back to him in a virtual yet embarassing-myself-to-coworkers manner, and felt all fuzzy inside.

Now, I'm alright with words, so I can't complain, but were *do* you people find all those bizarre images?

Hi there, Cran. I'm doing fine. Thank you for asking. Curiously, all my ailments vanished the second I hit post.

How about yourself? Did you finish building the trebuchet?

Mercy, so many visitors. I'll make extra coffee tomorrow morning. kenko, have you any good Ethiopian bean? gnfti, can you pick up some soy milk? Anyone know how to make scones? raedyn? Brats are ideal morning fodder, Anus. Breakfast on the balcony at, oh, say, 9-ish? 10-ish? That'll give us plenty of time to eat and chat and get to know our newcomers before beginning The Most Dangerous Game.

I thought you would recover, gram. Now for the other item:
Yes the trebuchet is finished and I will bring it in the morning before breakfast. I really think it is dangerous to have people access your deck this way. When will you put in a stairway to the deck?
Glad you are planning to serve scones; I am tired of pancakes with rabbit fur stuck all over them.

If the agenda isn't closed, I propose discussing a change of venue. It is getting chilly up north here, while summer is starting down south, wa-a-a-ay south in Australia. I posted this over at 10408 hoping dg would invite us.
Suggest we change course and turn the good ship JRun toward Australia. We can make our fortunes mining the Gold Coast and stay at dg's house. It will be nice to be on dry land for a while.
dg is punctual, straightforward and very useful. His mother wants him to do more, so we can let him cook for the crew.
(part of that last is from his user page)
It is along trip, so perhaps we could use the trebuchet as a kind of first stage rocket to impel us halfway. Shrimp on the barbie for Thanksgiving!

EPISODE #9625 "AT LACE VALUE"

INT. NIGHT. THE LACING ROOM.

Having decided upon a new destination, our familiar heroes are readying supplies for the upcoming journey, while also celebrating the return of an old friend.

RAEDYN: So, I can't believe Cranberry went for that 'gnifty' guy, or whatever his name is. I mean, he can't even spell.

IIHAA: Today I got an email from an organization called Euro Club International. They wanted to "fulfil my fantasies with more than 50 of the hottest girls from around the world, discreetly and affordably".

NICE DONKEY: Hm. In other news, what is anyone going to be for Halloween?

IIHAA: I wanted to be Harry Morgan but Matt wouldn't let me.

CRANBERRY: I don't know, but why do I keep reaching for my Tippi Hedren costume?

GNFTI: Well, winter time has just started in Europe. Maybe your body's style clock is confused.

CRANBERRY: Isn't it amazing how protective mefites can be?

GNFTI: Just be fabulous, dahling.

ND: Sooo.... what happens in here, anyway?

GRAMSCHMIDT: This is where a certain cubic volume of sugar becomes the proud recipient of a certain quantity of a certain hallucinogen.

ND: What was that, gram? I didn't hear you... I seem to be stuck... staring...

GRAMSCHMIDT: I know. It's a hell of a trebuchet. Cranberry nearly broke her back carrying it up here.

DELMOI: What, exactly, do you mean when you say "trebuchet". The term gets thrown around here a lot, maybe more then "longboat" these days.

ALL: Hey, how did you get in here?

KENKO: Huh? Man, I just can't concentrate these days. So, when do we set sail?

GRAMSCHMIDT: Erm, I suppose the term 'launch' would be more appropriate in this instance. I say noon UTC tomorrow, on Halloween.

IIHAA: Yay. Will you bring the bees?

ND: Well, as long as there are sugar cubes.

ALL: Australia, here we come!!

GNFTI, how about a scary Choose-Your-Own-Adventure addendum to EPISODE #9625 "AT LACE VALUE" for Halloween? We could start like this . . .

(1) If you want the gang to pile into the trebuchet and head for Australia, turn to page 72.

(2) If you want the gang to grind delmoi's axe, turn to page 114.

(3) If you want the gang to dress all the bees in little Tippi Hedren costumes and launch them at dersins for ratting them out, turn to page 118.

You can't purge what I've been bingeing on, raedyn.

Now, who's going to post our interactive longboat to ProjeFi?

Celcius, duh.

Oh yeah, well here it's below zero kelvin. Can you imagine?!? Now THAT'S cold. My molecules aren't even moving, it's so cold.

It's even worse than that, Cran. I'm in the absolute zero walk in freezer. It looks like our lab sure can afford expensive stuff. Maybe they can afford me a raise.

Sounds cool, donkey friend! Can you pick up a pint of Phish Food or Cookie Dough? (My favourite is Butter Almond Toffee but they don't make them anymore, or at least not here.)

Although, I have trouble believing you. I mean, your fingers hooves are moving?
posted by goodnewsfortheinsane at 5:47 PM on November 9, 2005

Well, um, no. I mean yes! No! I mean, um, yes.

Okay, fine, there is no absolute zero freezer here. But what if we did have one? Oh man, that would be so cool!

I'd settle for a thermoacoustic refrigerator, though. Especially one filled with Chocolate Fudge Brownie. Do you think we could get one for the longboat?
posted by Nice Donkey at 6:11 PM on November 9, 2005

Choc Fudge Brownie is, of course, for sissies. Did I mention I have a B&J museum in my house? Remind me to post a picture someday.

While we're talking weather: Low tens C here - we've had a pretty good 'aftersummer' as we like to call it, a balmy 20-ish C, way mild for the time of year. So fire up those Hummers, people.

gnfti, please post pictures of the B&J museum in your house. I don't believe I know any one else who has one.

Nice Donkey, please post a Google map to your thermoacoustic refrigerator filled with Chocolate Fudge Brownie. I am not intimidated by being called a sissy, and I can bring my own spoon.

Anyone interested in a pool to see how long the blink tag survives banning?

This wins every MetaFilter prize known to man. Or womyn. Anyway, in the spirit of the cookie post, I'm considering composing an FPP letting people know that Nixon resigned. Thoughts?

Think you should run Nixon resignation by Snopes before posting.

btw, how did wolfdog manage to read the tiny type?

probably his superior canine eyesight. Unfortunately we are losing this important segment of kingdom animalia's gene pool because millions of brutal forced castrations and female genital mutilations take place every year in America. Eugenics is WRONG, period!!! Take back America!

I guess he just read the "November 10" date header and compared the archives from that day. You can read it if you already *know* what it says.

Well, so much for eternal fame - now, let's talk <big>ICE CREAM!!!</big>

I tossed most of them out when I moved, now I just keep one of each flavour in the little windowsills along the staircase.

How frustrating - I wanted to welcome our new pup socket viking with a neighborino reference, only to see they've already thought of that.
posted by goodnewsfortheinsane at 9:15 AM on November 12, 2005

What an impressive collection! How could you bear to toss some of your museum-quality artifacts? Unfortunate that they are now lost to the aesthetes of the world.

Welcome the pup socket indeed! Coach Driesell will be a great addition to the crew (unless he gets bossy)

Will the Reverend Spooner be the next pup socket?

I guess not. It only works in preview
Does the small tag work?
maybe
posted by Cranberry at 12:23 PM on November 12, 2005

Cran, I'd register as Spooner but I'm lazy and I wouldn't keep up witching the swords around all the time. Plus, I have a slight moral problem with the notion of pup sockets.

Addition to longboat shopping list:

caddis bookmarked the cheese recipes. let's be sure he is on the next trip. mmm, mushrooms, cheese, we need bacon or breakfast sausages, and some eggs for an omelet.

Man, that thread is classic. Before we lose our minds over there and forget all about our lowly grey longboat - it's the 13th, where do we go next?

Should we perhaps make an exception and migrate to the blue for just this once? I say there's room for shrooms in our boat.

Oh wow, gnfti, would it be wise to move to the blue? Would not posting our um, unique messages bring down the wrath of the metabluenazis? The vigilantes whose duty (and pleasure) is to pile on with endless repititions of the same complaint? Perhaps even #1 would prefer we maintain our message board below the horizon.

As dershins predicted we can go to 10430 which is still open but has 173 comments already. I am on broad band and do not have to wait for a long thread to load. But we could shrug off the constraints of custom and boldly go where fewer men persons have gone before - to tiny 10431, or on to the stars.
posted by Cranberry at 12:48 PM on November 13, 2005

10430 is still in use, in fact it has current posts. Be kinda rude to barge in on the novel writers who are already suffering - writers' cramp! Some place requires handwritten entries?
posted by Cranberry at 11:34 PM on November 13, 2005

You're right, Cran, but I thought the locus of the ongoing mushroom ordeal might prove a worthy exception. This cosy place shuts down rilly rilly soon, so can we reach some kind of consensus here?

If that monster's descendants might be around, I vote we avoid Australia. Since 10430 is still functioining, how about we trebuchet to 10431 West Gramschmidt's Patio until we come up with a plan?
