Can we get the 'post a new thread' link dimmed if we haven't waited enough days? (particularly for meta and ask).

Not a bad idea, though I'd have to check every member's posting history before displaying the menu.

How about instead, the "sorry, you can't post" page has more info about when you can post, so you know exactly how long you have to wait to do it again.

Hmm, how about a cookie based countdown? You'd still use the same check (regardless of cookie), inside the actual post page?

Please..., I paid my nickel because I wanted to link something after lurking for a long time. Finding out I couldn't post after shooting my clam really cheesed me off.

Shooting clams has been notoriously cheesy for decades.

I'm glad somebody is finally sticking up for the underclam in all of us.

Yeah! And what's up with all that "happy as a clam" shit? Stereotypes suck!

Hmm, how about a cookie based countdown?

"You have to eat four (4) more cookies until you can post again. Get chompin, stringbean."

Excellent suggestion!

I like the idea of dropping your last post date into the cookie. It ought to be risk free- if someone starts mucking with the cookie manually, the Post page should still catch it.
