The next big thing August 23, 2006 4:33 PM   Subscribe

What's it all for, anyway? Why do we fight? I mean, where's it going? What happens if the whole ball of wax just up and disappears one day? In short, why are we here? I'm speaking of Metafilter, of course! Pony-please: An admin blog detailing site-related news, plans in development, maybe a good call-out now and then. This seems preferable to combing MeTa for stray comments in re the next big thing.

This would make a neat youtube post.

status.metafilter.com.

Matt doesn't update it, really. So...

seriously! can we convince matt to post updates to youtube? you know, like a vlog!? it's be great. then some jackass or another could post about it in the blue! and then we could call them out in the grey! IT'LL BE THE SAME, ONLY DIFFERENT

but seriously, i would love to have some insight into the mind of matt, but i understand he probably has larger fish to fry.

boo_radley... I was under the impression that status was just for server downtime info. I'm more interested in the community stuff: obviously, for instance, MeFi's having a growth spurt, and a lot of things are -happening-, new services (music, jobs, etc.) What's up with that? A month-long contest? Feels a little pre-IPO-ish.

I used to announce detailed plans in advance but I found after years of doing it that it often backfired. People would get really mean if something wasn't released on time (the biggest problem) or they would spend weeks chopping up ideas I floated as stuff I was working on, and I found I had to spend hours every day explaining and refuting instead of actually coding.

I prefer to surprise people with new stuff, and let a few people know it tiny out of the way places that something may drop soon when they ask for it.

Argh. I need to find a better source for my klystron tubes. These North Korean knockoffs of early Cold War era Soviet tubular antiquities is lackluster at best. That's the third one this week.

If it means that much to you it's not actually that hard to keep tabs on MeTa and see what Matt's up to. When it's worth knowing I'm sure you'll find out - word spreads quickly around these parts. I've never really felt like there was a shortage of Matt and his thoughts here. Does he really need to do another blog? Anyway, I hear he's already frying up some large fish.

A blog is a good idea. In addition I'd like quarterly reports and the option of 6-week 30 minute status meetings. Also mathowie, your going to have to start wearing a tie to work. This working in your birthday suit isn't going to fly anymore.

But seriously,

People would get really mean if something wasn't released on time (the biggest problem) or they would spend weeks chopping up ideas I floated as stuff I was working on, and I found I had to spend hours every day explaining and refuting instead of actually coding.

these aren't really problems. If you can't make release dates then designate release quarters or, heck, designate release years or decades. #1 rule of deadline estimation: there is some time scale at which the deadline can likely be met with high probability or the manager will die of natural causes. Choose the smaller. As for the whiners, you don't have to respond to them. Let them debate but you're the decider, dammit.

I personally couldn't contribute to another blog come hell or high water. On the other hand, I'm usually not busy coding the site, so folks can always IM me and I'll make some wild-ass guesses which will deflect some of the heat from mathowie.

We probably should do a little better putting some adminish stuff in the sideblog, but that's probably as devbloggish as things will get. Maybe mathowie can get a webcam up and running again....

A diligent crew could track everything matt says and start their own blog about it. Not me, though. I don't do crazy things like that.

Fight

Red drips from my chin where I have been eating.
Not all the blood, nowhere near all, is wiped off my mouth.
Clots of red mess my hair
And the tiger, the buffalo, know how.
I was a killer.

Yes, I am a killer.
I come from killing.
I go to more.

I drive red joy ahead of me from killing.
Red gluts and red hungers run in the smears and juices
of my inside bones:

The child cries for a suck mother and I cry for war.

That's not the first time Matt has said that he's working on a jobs section of the site. He was talking about that before we ever saw Music.

It does appear it's being worked on; invalid/non-existent sub-sites bounce you straight to the blue.
