The membership number keeps going up, yet I thought the site was closed off. What am I missing?

What am I missing?

I don't know about you, but I'm missing my car keys. Anybody seen 'em?

I miss being an innocent newbie who couldn't keep his mouth shut.
Voyageman: you're serious about that Oakland friend of yours, aren't you? ;)

I do see Previously Discussed but dont see any hints. And yes, Im still rooting for Sleepless in Oakland. btw, she has gd779's keys and will give them back only if allowed in.

Ah, Sherlock, the hint is actually in your now infamous Oakland Cutie Thread. Closely examine Kindall's comment and you will discover all(nudge, nudge...) More than this I cannot say without killing you, my gallant, persistent and downright pesky friend... :)

Hey, do I have to turn to them to get an answer???

Oh, no, they don't have clearance to get to this. (The right attitude... This suit burns better... BURN'S SUIT!)

So we live in a world of scarce resources and have to incorporate that into the community. Why should a member who doesn't "contribute" (objectively speaking, by not posting or commenting) prevent a new member who is prepared to contribute from joining. I recognize a risk is that member might post just for the sake of posting to remain a member. But then again, why be a member if one is not prepered post and comment? Are all 12510 active members? Also, let's assume one wanted to voluntarily give up membership, how is that done? Whom would it go to?

Actually, my comment in the Oakland thread was a simple penis reference. %)

gd779, forgive me for any presumption or liberty taken in reposting your comment here, but it's a very good point and I fear the thread you posted it to might be deleted in the fullness of time:

"Think that proposal through. What would happen if each of our over 12,000 members posted just 2 links a year? That's 65 links a day, 365 days a year. MetaFilter would be unreadable.

MetaFilter is at it's best when the links are much less frequent but of outstanding quality."

My guess is that a handful of people are getting new accounts through the power of begging.

One word: eBay.
