Best Tagline Contest June 22, 2007 2:09 AM Subscribe
Can we have an end of year competition for the best "Metafilter: Spoof tagline" comments? (e.g. MetaFilter: Squirrels, jesus, orange juice, or whatever.). It could link to lots of good threads, with the winner being decided by whoever gets the most favourites. My suggestion for a prize would be the magic ability to turn on img tags for a single unannounced 24 hour period of the winner's choosing, anytime in the next 12 months.
This game isn't any fun unless the winning line makes the random image roll.

What do I win?

The only way I'd enjoy this is if it were some sort of historical contest where people had to look through old posts to find the best tagline, say between April 2002 and October 2002. Otherwise it just winds up filling up the site with noise. And no, there won't be any IMG tag prizes I'm afraid.

Research through the dusty archives? That's so like a librarian. What format should my citations be in, MLA or Chicago?
Please don't take my gentle mockery to indicate I dislike this idea. I think it's awesome, I'm just afraid I'd lose.

I love how so many little corners of Metafilter coolness have developed with the help of new features and stuff over the years... my perennial problem is that someone points one out to me, and I forget it about 5 minutes later.

That's what I was thinking of, but for the period Jan 07-Dec 07. I guess "IMG for a day" is just a crazy pipedream though. I do wish there was more seasonality to MeFi, besides Elephant Day and Cat-Scan.com Day.

See? It's no fun if everyone knows there's a possibility of a contest. We'd all just be picking any old random phrase and throwing it out there hoping it would stick... I agree with Jessamyn (and whoever else agreed with her) that if it's going to happen, the entries need to be ones that were posted before now.

Part of the reason the few taglines that have made me laugh were funny was because they sort of snuck up on me while reading a thread. Favorites are almost running this site now. Favorites were implemented* to avoid the problem of people making an inconsequential comment in a thread solely for the purpose of being able to easily find it again. It has turned into a different monster. A large part of the podcast is based on the most favorited (not from jessamyn though and I find that refreshing), users wrangling over their favorite count and in this post, a proposal to have a competition based on a favorite count. I don't want any part of it.
*Deletes all favorites*

Yeah, this is a pretty bad idea, for the reasons stated above. People as a whole have pretty mixed feelings on the tagline thing, and I have this feeling (anecdotal, granted) that it's been on an uptick lately anyway. Offering a prize for it would encourage exactly the wrong sort of thing about here.
On the other hand, I really like the dumpster-diving notion of plumbing the archives for what's come naturally before. So, you know, go crazy on that end.

Let us all return to our regularly scheduled programming.

You want to award in-jokes? *head asplodes*
Hows about we scour the archives and give a hour timeout to every incidence of the tagline in-joke. And if it is one incidences where the person made a tagline out of something that had not been said in the thread--thereby botching the in-joke in a desperate attempt to show they are in on the in-joke--then the person who does that gets a week for each incidence. That is how in-jokes should be treated. Awarding them? That's a joke right?
In-jokes are like when a dog shits in the kitchen and just stands there tail-wagging as if to say "Isn't this a great turd?"
Thanks for letting me be grouchy.
(Did I mention that in-jokes are teh suck?)

Zephyrial said 'plop'.
Zephyrial also said "sickening"... which is: FAIL.
If you want to be scathing, you must do better than "sickening". "Sickening" is Classic Death Metal from Italy, or maybe a Japanese soft drink.
And don't try resorting to the thesaurus, Z. Atrocious, disgusting, foul, horrid, nasty, nauseating, offensive, repellent, repulsive, revolting, ugly, unwholesome, vile: none will work.
Well. Maybe "foul". But may I suggest "grisly"?

Erm, okay, instead of sickening, how about "really really really irritating"? Tell you what, you can replace "sickening" with your favorite adjective.
But damnit, for the sake of all silly-sounding verbs, I stand by "plop".

Good point. I sort of feel bad for the guy, though. He constantly obsesses over me on this site to an unhealthy point. And yet, I mostly ignore him and feel bad for it. Surely that is a sad existence to be ignored by the object of one's obsession. Sometimes I throw him a bone. Maybe I need to put him back on the ignore block thing. Or maybe he needs to get a life.

For somebody who constantly tells everyone what contributions are appropriate for metafilter, how to justify using the site as your personal IM service?
My making a one-word joke about something's that's annoyed me for some time in the context of your hypocritical ranting about in jokes isn't an obsession and it certainly isn't any less healthy than you requiring 50 words of bile to respond. Happy Friday.
