Why is a partial list of unavailable leet vanity plates in Virginia sidebar fabulous?
Because I like cramming memes into seven characters as much as anyone, but the sidebar sort of portrays the thread as a resource that it is not.

To me it was funny because the OP was fairly sure that her plate was the one that put STFU on the banned list for VA plates. I thought that was interesting. Everything in the sidebar doesn't have to be OMG amazing.

Fairly sure? It seems there is no question of laying claim while parsing: "thanks to me", but I could be reading that wrong.
Someone where I work reported it, and after I'd gotten a letter from the DMV I found a user in a forum that stated he'd gotten the same letter just a day after I did; his plate also had STFU in it.
Yeah, great story.

No one got STFU banned. The OP just said that she got STFU THX accepted. She even said: "the statement STFU has been banned because of me is more of an assumption".

I didn't intend it to be a statement proclaiming that I alone was responsible for the ban. But as I said, someone else with the same combination of letters also had their plate revoked. As I said later in the thread, it was an assumption. Could be coincidence, sure, but strange nevertheless.
I can't verify anything for certain, as I don't work at the DMV, and I don't know anyone that does, but if my new plate gets revoked I'll be sure to update on the ever-so-fascinating DMV story of "OMG WTF STFU bannination in VA".

I really don't think this is newsworthy, notable, or even particularly interesting. There's no central database, each state has their own so STFU is now apparently only banned in VA. How did that happen? A DOT employee or member of the public realized it meant something dirty and it got added to their database. That's it.

Example: My dad worked for a state's DOT. While driving around I saw someone with the license plate "JIZZIN." I mentioned to him that I was surprised that was allowed. I then had to explain to my parents what jizzin means. The plate got revoked and that combination of letters got flagged for scrutiny on new plate applications.

sephira: yeah, I read the whole thread, and enjoyed it. I wish I could have come up with an idea for you!
I just don't think it should be sidebarred the way it was, which makes it seem like the thread reveals some kind of definitive way to check for geekspeak plates. Here in CA that is not the case: you can't get instant approval and you probably can't get anything naughty. Too many driving geeks here already.
But as Jessamyn has said, it was put there based on her reaction to your anecdote. I'm glad she thought it was teh funneh. NBD RLY

I had meant it in reference to the state of VA, not the entire country. And it was an assumption, not a statement of fact.
