Post Title

Would it be a huge inconvenience to actually have Post Titles heading posts on the blue? Yea, I understand the face of the blue is tried and true, however, some, if not all, posts need "Headlines". Why even have them if they only show up AFTER you check into the post/thread? (not complaining, I love Mefi!)

It seems posters often put a jokey, vague or generic title; a scroll-over many of the posts on the front page confirms this. So why bother putting them on the front page?

Well, to be fair, I think people use a jokey/vague/generic title because it doesn't appear on the front page.

unixrat: Excellent. It adds to anyones ability to quickly scroll through the blue to find a particular post.

It's been my experience that using the various search methods suck. Especially for posts that are only a few days old. It's much easier to scroll through and find the "headline".
As least it would be.

Tech solution to a human problem. I don't think we'd get anything but a bit of extra clutter out of it, snsranch.

As a hackaround (other than Mefi Titles, natch), you might subscribe to the mefi feed in a Google Reader or whatever and use that to skim titles.

I don't get it. Isn't the title now part of the URL? Just hover your mouse over the word "comments" and you can see the title. Am I missing something?

My understanding (though I came late to it) is that titles exist for users who read the site via feed, and for searches. Until I knew that, I used jokey titles. Once I understood that they had some utility, I made an effort to make my titles indicate something about the post content.

But I agree that this is rather inscrutable.

Thanks folks, for the feedback, I didn't realize there were so many other ways to get around that. (scroll-over, duh.)

I never even thought about effing around with my titles. Hmm, next time.
