Is MeFi the new digg? August 1, 2007 12:12 PM   Subscribe

What are the rules for posting to MeFi? Ive noticed that many posts are news articles and many of the op/ed posts get snarked or berated for not being newsworthy... I thought this was "best of the web"? I for one will read digg if I want news and MeFi if I want to find interesting web articles...

But...both your posts to Mefi have been news articles (although with good supporting links)...

So maybe you should clarify your definitions of news and web artciels?

Dear Rip Van Subaruwrx ... You've had an account since 2005 and you're only just now noticing the confusion over what makes a good metafilter post? And does the death of a couple horned owls count as news or best-of-the-web?

As for the snark, well, there's no shortage of that here. Even if you stumble upon the perfect formula for making the quintessential metafilter post, you'll still get some of that. It's a by-product of all the cabbage and cheese, you see.

You know that quote that Neitzsche has about the thought of suicide often being comforting in a dark night? I now feel that way about making the most inappropriate faux pas imaginable on metafilter. I stare into the abyss, and that is enough.

WHAT MAKES THE GRASS GROW!?

LUCY:
AND WAY UP THERE THOSE FLUFFY LITTLE WHITE THINGS,
THOSE ARE CLOUDS,
THEY MAKE THE WIND BLOW.
AND WAY DOWN THERE,
THOSE TINY LITTLE BLACK THINGS...
THOSE ARE BUGS
THEY MAKE THE GRASS GROW.

LINUS:
Is that so?

LUCY:
That's right! They run around all day, tugging and tugging on each tiny seedling until it grows into a great tall blade of grass!

LINUS:
Boy, that's amazing!

CHARLIE BROWN:
Oh, good grief!2

I will support Mr. Subaru's point that those who cut and paste the topic-du-jour or bland news articles from Digg or Reddit usually fail to make MeFi the "best of the web."

2. If you're going to come in here and poop all over us, then you damn well better come back in before the comment count hits 50 and start responding to people asking for more information. I cannot take any more of this "Look! I'm shitting in MeTa! Have fun figuring out if I'm a troll or just confused!" bullshit.

3. People shit on posts. It happens. You MUST have known this already. When the transit strike in nyc happened, affecting millions of people and easily interesting to anyone who cares about labor disputes and the effect of transit on commercial business whether they live in nyc or not, there were people saying "I don't live in new york. Why should I care about this and why is it on metafilter?" IGNORE THEM.

I'm beginning to think Meta posts are roundly snarked and posted just to have a reason to talk to one another. How else would any of the people in these threads keep in regular group contact with one another? It's a bonafide subculture of metafilter. Really, it seems like the two best ways to handle Metas that are from functional newbies, or just people being crabby is to either be helpful or roll your eyes and find something else to do. Yet, the posts elicit long discussions with people being clever or jumping on the insulted bandwagon. Which is fine, I guess, but it is in reality just community chit chat/reinforcing activity.

Yeah, the eternal "best of the web" is a tired discussion for those who have had it before, over and over and over, but this is not a gated community, there will ALWAYS be people who haven't had the discussion, and who will want to know what the hell "." means. The best thing would be to point them to a FAQ and close the thread.

Just as people bitch about people who ask these things because it is tiresome, the bitching about those things also becomes tiresome.

it is all an infinite loop to which I'm sure I've added more momentum.

I see where you are coming from edgeways. I often don't have time to read the links in FPPs so I don't comment in them but MetaTalk is about Metafilter, so I always know what we are talking about over here so I can pop in and comment on anything. But you are right. It may not be helpful. If we had a moderator in MeTa who would have to flip a switch to allow general commenting in a thread, but who ninety percent of the time just left one comment saying "See FAQ #7" or "E-mail cortex" and then closed the thread, then I think that there would be rioting in the e-streets. But at the same time, I do think that MeTa has been the same twelve posts over and over again lately or just blatant attention-whoring and that we should look for a way to curb that. However, me popping into MeTa threads and saying something random and unhelpful is not the way to do that, so I think that I will try to cut back a little.

You're not an idiot, people just get restless and snarky when the host doesn't show up for dinner. The problem with calling out stuff that lands on Digg as being as such not good metafilter material is it misses the reality that good stuff gets popular. Digg, as you say, moves much faster than mefi—it goes through how many thousands of links a day? Some of the same stuff that gets posted there is going to get posted on mefi, and I'm willing to be that it's very rarely the case that someone posts something to Mefi because they saw it on Digg.

And I hear you—I like the weirder, off-the-beaten-path stuff too—but the internet has changed a whole lot in eight years and you have to acknowledge the role that has in what you're describing as a new phenomenon. In 1999 or 2001 a whole lot less of the path had been beaten, and things like Digg just didn't exist to the same degree. Now there's aggregation up the wazoo and a much bigger, much more active group of people pointing to or collecting content. Some redundancy in what shows up from site to site is inevitable, and it doesn't make much sense to condemn folks for posting interesting stuff just because the stuff happens to have gotten popular.
posted by cortex (staff) at 3:00 PM on August 1, 2007

Let's think about this... everything is posted to Digg. Then the good stuff floats to the top, and you don't see the crap. That is the point of Digg. How could it not have a heavy overlap with a site that tries to only post the good stuff to start with?

Also, 30% of Digg is Ron Paul posts, compared to roughly 1% here, so there's no overlap there. Plus Digg has all the tech posts, and those don't get posted here. So basically, stop pulling numbers out of thin air to support your arguments.

I love you all. Especially sub'''x for claiming apostrophes are a persuasion. You just can't make that shit up.

subaruwrx writes "I still dont understand why 60-70% of MeFi is reposts from Digg. If I read it on Digg, I dont need to read about it on the blue. Sure, many people dont read digg, but lets focus more on the posts that have a point and a topic with several supporting links. "

The best FPPs don't need a passel of supporting links and they generally shouldn't have a point. If you've got a point to make there is all sorts of free blog hosting out there.

So who has the guts to post this link I found on Fark as an FPP? You know, to test quality control. Hint: not me.

Well, it's been on MetaChat with no ill effects, so it might survive. It's the sort of thing I would post with an obscure title and a single word containing the link. You know, because it's not enough to be a weak link, I like to be certain that the format of the post will piss people of regardless of the content.

I would call it: Irritated Red Arm of Death

Well, if you want to be particularly non-PC (which I do), you could go for "Flesh-Toned Screen of Death" and maybe link it to a screed about Crayola still making that shade of crayon, but calling it "peach" instead. That would add to the universal appeal, I think.

Oh and, by the way - NSFW warning on the MeCha thread I linked to up there. Better late that never, I guess.

for my respected mentor, IRFH, Florence Henderson in a risque black bondage outfit;

You just THINK you were posting that for IRFH.

Nurse, cancel all my appointments for the rest of the day. I have a special research case for us to tickle.

Err, I mean tackle.

Hell, that doesn't sound quite right either. Just bring the paddle, ok?

The perfect(ly lame) FPP for the BSOD tattoo might go a little something like this:

You probably have an arm. And chances are you are running Windows, so you have no doubt seen the Blue Screen of Death. Apparently, this guy wants to see it every day!

(hahahaaaa hohoooooo heeeee!!!!!!!!)

Like others have said, some of us don't read Digg/BoingBoing/Fark/SlashDot/WhateverOtherSitesApparentlyNamedBy AnIdiot.
Frankly, they don't have enough of those sweet, sweet owl and owl-related posts to make typing their URLs worth it.

I just get so sick of seeing regurgitated material.
Well, quit watching those damn owls, then.

The purpose of MetaFilter, from the wiki:
MetaFilter is a community weblog that consists of member-posted links to interesting and informative content, with the goal of accretively posting such links until the aggregated links on the site asymptotically approach and reflect the Final Page, a mythical website whose content, it is said, contains not only all the information ever generated since God created the universe 6,000 years ago (.pdf) but also pictures of adorable cats. With each IraqFilter FPP, with each gnomic utterance of hama7, with each link that was posted on digg days earlier, MetaFilter comes to resemble more closely that mythical website, and Cthulhu stirs in the sleepless depths.
Hope this helps!

Digg/BoingBoing/Fark/SlashDot/WhateverOtherSitesApparentlyNamedBy AnIdiot.

You forgot sk-rt.

Because apparently typing an "i" is so-o-o-o much harder than typing an '-".

Does anybody else see the lyrics to that song as being written in all caps?

What are the rules for posting to MeFi?

1. Do not act like a total fucktard.
2. Make sure what you are posting will not aid in MetaFilter's slow transition into Asshattapalooza.
3. Do not post to MeFi.
