I can't be the only one? August 5, 2007 10:38 PM   Subscribe

I like the new /random in the sidebar, but all I use it for is to try and find good flameouts on the grey. Could there be a /flame, so I can have something to do on a rainy day?

You could always start one yourself. Personally I use to find them amusing, but now find them tedious and tiring and fail to see how they are any good for the community.

That's a marvelous idea... why, I'd cut off my arm for it!!!

It could be a whole SXSW thing.

Half of the posts in the gray are flameouts. Just keep reloading until you get one.

Why do they keep doing that?

Damn kids oughtta get off the lawn.

Here's my suggestion KingoftheWhales: Start reading at Meta post #1 and compile a list. Then post it here and it'll be available for you when ever you feel a need for heat in the future.

Only - what? - one out of ten posts on MeTa isn't a flame. The rest escalated into some sort of snarkfest flame, if it hadn't begun as one.

Well gosh, that would be great. It's just that I thought some of you fancy computer folks could do it with some deft keystokes in a matter of seconds. Oh well, I guess I'll just go off and start compiling my list then... Oh, don't worry about me... No trouble at all...

Isn't "Flame out" what Jonathan Storm says when he's done on the walkie talkie, to which Ben Grimm responds "Thing out"?

KotW (kah-TOOOW-wah, that's what I'm thinking): I see you have a few comments, but have you ever read MeTa?

I'm sure the smart guys who make this all happen could do the voodoo that theydoo and make all your dreams come true, but why?

So that we can have an archive of, 'the shamed'?

That seems less than productive and an admin answered your question instantly, anyway.

It would be thoughtless to post a link to random flames. Metafilter is a community that prides itself on overthinking things, it's quite enlightened in a goat.cx meets tubgirl kind of way. Chuckles is on the right track but starting a Wiki page on famous flame outs wouldn't be in keeping with the spirit of the community. It's also been done by a site who's first rule is not to mention it's name. Instead we should put together helpful hints on the Wiki.

As an avid reader of flameouts (yes, I know I should be ashamed of myself) I'll post this little tip: You can find some good results in searching for flameouts by Googling "metafilter + flameout" [but not in quotation marks when you search]. By using just plain "metafilter" instead of "site: www.metafilter.com" you get results from the blue, green and gray, plus some bonus whining about metafilter from other places around the web.

I know flameouts aren't good for the site, but goshdarnit they make for some entertaining reading.
