MeFi affiliates? August 8, 2007 2:58 PM   Subscribe

Is there a complete list somewhere of all the 'affiliate' Metafilter sites like Monkeyfilter, Metachat, Sportsfilter, etc? What official relationship do they have with the main site, if any? Is there an official policy on creating your own *filter site? Encouraged, frowned upon?

I also maintain a list of mefi-ish things over at metafiltr. (Presumed incomplete—I'd say 'let me know if I'm missing anything', especially in the para-mefi/blog section, but I suppose I can just see what comes up here.)

Neither of those pages mention I EAT TAPES.

I would pay someone money to start a decent PoliticsFilter site before the elections.

What would make a decent PoliticsFilter?

Good design, moderators that people trusted, guidelines for stuff and a group of people who would be happy talking politics every day on another site.

I see SportsFilter as a really successful spinoff site, for example. It has its own community with a clear purpose, it looks nice and has recognizeable MeFites as well as other non-MeFite participants. If you're really into sports but you sort of like the MeFi format, you can go over there and be someplace with (at least a fair amount of) other MeFites, but where every link is about sports. It's cool.

What would make a decent PoliticsFilter?

Users would be required to register their political affiliation upfront, and could only see posts & comments favourable to their own side.

(a bit like here, really, but without Steven C den Beste)

C'mon, UbuRovias, the fact that Steven's mom and dad showed him how to use a credit card on the internet has to count for something.

Discuss.

Don't forget NewYorkerFilter.com, which I created and promptly abandoned a week later. It works though!

whoops, I mean newyorkerfilter.com

The marketing effort for this is astounding.

Ok, BrandonBlah-cher, I used your damn "form" to send you an "e-mail". I won't set you up for any spam if you reply, but I might give your real address to wendell. You contact-form using bastard. (Can't you just smell the level of discourse I will bring to the site? Smells like... another $2. And victory.)

Why not make a PoliticsFilter that displays all of the threads from mefi that are tagged with "politics". Then if something is too crappy (newfilter-y, whatever, but still [politics related) for the front page of mefi, the admins could push it to appear on politicsfilter only (as an alternative to an outright delete).

OR if that's an admin headache there could be a flag for "Push to politicsfilter" and if some number of people flag it within a certain amount of time of its posting (e.g., 30 flags in 5 minutes), it gets pushed to politicsfilter and only appears there.

Thoughts?

"Thoughts?"

Your post advocates a:
[x] community moderated
[x] technical
[ ] social
[ ] legislative
[ ] economic
[ ] authoritarian
solution to crappy MetaFilter posts.

I'm afraid it won't work due to:
[x] the King of the Shitpile problem
[ ] Matt doesn't have time
[ ] the code doesn't work that way
[ ] technology doesn't work that way
[ ] wishing doesn't make things better
[x] scoreboards don't fix anything
[x] it doesn't prevent shitty posts from appearing
[x] nobody ever agrees what a shitty post is
[x] requiring cooperation from asshats

In summary:
[x] Yours isn't the worst idea I've ever heard, but it's not good.
[ ] That's a pretty dumb thing to do.
[ ] Do you even understand the words you're using?
[ ] Die.

I thought about doing MovieFilter, but I'm not sure there's a need for it.

Not only that, but I suspect that jessamyn was referring to a politics site that has no relationship with MeFi. That way, she doesn't have to deal with the politics bullshit and can cut a swath through the inevitable 5 brazillian threads about US politics by saying "take it to PoliFi, we don't do politics here".

Maybe we could take up a collection? Then punish the next person who whines here about why their comment/AskMe thread got deleted by making them moderate it for a month. Win/win/win!
posted by dg at 8:20 PM on August 8, 2007

Any chance of randomising those options, majick?

I wouldn't mind just being able to hit a [DO NOT WANT] button on most MeTa posts & having a generator based on your formula explain things to the whiner on my behalf.
posted by UbuRoivas at 10:27 PM on August 8, 2007

and dg - i think it's nice if brazilians show an interest in united states politics, even if they only contribute five posts. why not just let them have their say on the blue?
posted by UbuRoivas at 10:30 PM on August 8, 2007

I'd be willing to make a politicsfilter website... though i saw that somebody just registered politicsfilter.com (Brandon Blatcher of Savannah, Georgia, according to WHOIS. One of us?).

So... uh.. Govfilter.com?

Never heard of'em, but he sounds handsome, intelligent and charming. I'd do'em.

Could you arrange so that every post to metafilter that is deleted because it belongs on politicsfilter is actually automatically posted to politicsfilter? But the post also remains visible on the metafilter front page for a few minutes so metafilter users can see it and jump to it ("You are now leaving MetaFilter." and then the colors change.)?

And just for fun, make SCDB one of the politicsfilter moderators. Then he'd spend all of his time moderating over there instead of immoderating over here.
