What was the longest thread about, anyway? November 17, 2007 1:11 PM   Subscribe

Seeing this recent MeTa thread at 378 comments made me wonder what the longest pan-MetaFilter thread was. I came up with this from August 24, 2001 at a whopping 1729 comments (apparently some kind of record), but they're context-less (for me, at least) because the link to the "metafilter parody" that the post refers to is gone. Can anyone slake my thirst for MetaFilter history and supply the parody that inspired such prolific commenting?

Regarding long MeFi threads, there was the Ted Haggard thread -- with 1831 comments.

Amazing that in a thread of 1831 comments (especially here) that nobody said "longest thread ever" (which is why it didn't show up on my googlesearch).

Sorry... I misunderstood your question. I think the original link was to the brilliant Truth in Advertising short, or something very similar to it.

Christ, have I really been lurking posting to this site, for more than six fucking years?

I think this is what you're looking for (via Metafilter Wiki and the Wayback Machine).

psmealey: Thank you. Now the entire thread makes perfect sense. Apparently it's been this way here since the beginning.

Policy wonk stuff, denoting more facts and some actual research into topic. Conclusion drawn on these facts. Impact on conversation negligible.

I was thinking that the portobello mushroom thread was one of the longest, but maybe that one is memorable for other reasons.

Memories. Light the corners of my mind.

Is that the line? I always thought it was "LIKE the corner of my mind". Which didn't make a hell of a lot of sense.

It's actually "Mammaries, like the corners of my mind."

Because the corners of my mind are round and bouncy.

Miss L... that was... beautiful.

And I, too, always thought it was "like" and as a result thought the lyrics were stupid, while all along it was I who was stupid.

'Scuse me while I kiss this guy.

Damn kids, forgetting your history. The original stupidly-long thread was 1142, of course.

1142 and 9622 are the only two threads that I'm aware of that launched companion websites.

I'd never seen that 1142 thread stavros is pointing us towards. That's some crazy in there. The thread navigation script I have running indicates that the Neale fellow under discussion has 280 comments in that thread.

Now there's a good question: who has the record for most comments in one thread?
a dubious distinction, I would think, but interesting nonetheless

I don't know if you can suss that out, maybe cortex can, but perhaps this will help out. Mosessis, (*hi!*) meet the Metafilter contribution index.
