Wait, AskMe posters can't have links to flickr in their questions? Since when? What's the harm in that?
Or...is it just flickr links that point to cat pictures? posted by brain cloud at 9:23 PM on December 14, 2007
It does seem kind of funny. People link to photos periodically on AskMe, mostly for "name that object", but also for "ID this drawing" or other visual questions. All of these seem legitimate.
People link to photos and sites in their askme questions now and then; on a subset of those, we remove the links because they don't serve any purpose in getting the question answered, which veers uncomfortably close to self-link territory for something that gets as much traffic as the front page of AskMe.
There's no blanket ban on links in questions. There is an expectation that folks won't just throw in links for the hell of it, and a bunch of links to pictures of your kitty sounds a lot like the latter. I didn't see the original version of the post, but I'm not particularly surprised.
The post specifically asks about how big a particular cat is going to get. I would think photos of said cat would help in answering the question. posted by casarkos at 9:51 PM on December 14, 2007 [3 favorites]

Like I said, I didn't see the post in this case, so I can't say. But "pictures" rather than "picture" makes me suspect this one was overkill, especially with the question being "How can I figure out how long/tall/big my kitten will grow to be?" rather than "Please give me your best guess estimate of how big this kitten will be", which would be pretty weird belly-jean-counting for an AskMe anyway.
I have a miniature cat. I don't know why she is miniature, but she is. She is much smaller than my two other "normal-sized" cats. And I don't have a pic of her to post. But her name is Willow, if that matters. posted by amyms at 10:19 PM on December 14, 2007

As a joke, my partner gave his mum a cooking apron that was... interesting... in its design. Namely, a picture of a woman holding up an aromatic pie, with cats walking towards her, tails up with their cat anuses facing the viewer.
His mum was so shocked that, by the following Christmas, when we saw her blushingly take it out of the drawer, she had sewn buttons over the puckers. Big shiny ones, too. posted by Blazecock Pileon at 11:05 PM on December 14, 2007 [2 favorites]

Yes, I had a hot date with jetlag. It went well!
There were three photos that went to the URL of MeetMegan's cat's website. I don't know MeetMegan, but her question was mostly asking "Hey my cat measures this by that, is there a way to tell how big he is going to get?" not "Hey my kittie looks like this at six months, do you think he's going to be big?"
Links to photos as necessary illustrations are totally fine and this was sort of borderline. The fact that there were three links in one short question made it look sort of fishy and the general "no self-links in AskMe unless they're necessary" guideline is there so as admins we don't have to guess whether they're fishy or not or check the website to see if it has a bunch of Google ads on it. My apologies for not MeFiMailing MeetMegan or chiming in here sooner. posted by jessamyn at 1:39 AM on December 15, 2007

dubai needs (well, needed) librarians?
Yes actually. There are no library schools in the UAE. Add to this that many women are not allowed (by their families/fathers) to leave the country to go to school and the fact that the schools there want to hire degreed librarians BUT don't accept distance degrees, and they're in a bit of a jam. Most of the librarians I met there were Westerners. posted by jessamyn at 6:35 AM on December 15, 2007
No, we need less parts around these cats! GET THOSE CATS FIXED, PEOPLE!
I have never seen a cat that doesn't get hugely, amazingly fat.
My cats do not get fat. I don't feed them from the table or equate food with love. They get their daily quota of catfood and kibble and that's all she wrote. Plus they chase each other around and work off the calories. (The male looked amazingly like the kitten in modofo's picture a year or so ago. Now he's bigger, of course. Rangy and powerful, able to leap to the top of the mantelpiece in a single bound. BUT NOT FAT!)

I've been a member of this place for over 5 years and was a reader 2 years before that. Twice have threads affected me in a weird way upon reading them when I first woke up. When I awoke to read that Hunter Thompson shot himself I was devastated and my day was ruined. Now, there's this thread. I adopted two cat sisters that look almost exactly alike. I would post pictures but I don't have a camera. They are snuggling up against each other and grooming each other and doing all sorts of adorable cat things all the time, so much so that I've become immune to cute pictures of cats sleeping against one another.
