Mefi open thread? December 18, 2007 12:58 PM   Subscribe

A mefi open thread?

Has anyone ever suggested just having an always open chat-filter/anything-goes thread on the sidebar in metatalk? Just someplace to dump idle thoughts, etc? A lot of the bigger political blogs do that. You could just have it display comments from the last 48 hours. People could dump embryonic FPPs in there for comment.. people could gossip in there, ask hypotheticals that don't belong in askme, etc. I know metachat is already supposed to be for that, but why not have an outlet for it here, too?

I'm sure this will not be popular, just thought I'd throw the idea out there, though.

I know metachat is already supposed to be for that, but why not have an outlet for it here, too?

There have been a few recent MeTa posts that have turned into pretty much open threads. The open thread idea as I've seen it on other sites, notably Kos, seems to turn into the same fights and whatnot with the same people. There are a few IRC channels that are good for gossip and trash talking, and a lot of spinoff sites that are a little less formal than MeFi. I guess my main question is: what site problem does this solve?

Setting aside the fundamental question of Should We:
1. a literally unclosing thread would get unweildy, as anyone who's kept with a thread past comment 500 or so can attest;
2. resolving point (1) would involve some engineering to accommodate this idea;
3. moderating an open thread sounds like just a super big fun bundle of awesomeness, lemme tell ya.

Eh, it's a social release valve: people can make stupid jokes, pose chatfilter questions, maybe even post images, flame out, etc., without mucking up the blue or the green. Currently, the gray bears the brunt of this randomness, which is funny to me because it's like dancing naked in the lions' den, except the lions dance with you. I probably wouldn't use it much, unless Springsteen pinches off another stinker.

This is a great idea. That way, we spend all day every day disproving the existence of a god and learning about Ron Paul. Oh, and we can throw around some injokes, too. That is exactly what Mefi needed!

Come to think of it, a perpetual discussion about Ron Paul and unfunny injokes would, in and of itself, disprove the existence of a god.

Sometimes people post ponies to metatalk that translate as "Hey, I noticed that metafilter does a limited set of things very well and does a pretty good job of eliminating things that don't work out too well. I was wondering if we could just try to do EVERYTHING at once regardless of how well it would work out for the site."

It's understandable, but it's like walking into a library and saying "hey, could we also turn this into a roller derby, fast food restaurant, bowling alley and bar?" I mean, I suppose. But then it's not a library, is it?

I was actually recognized by a MeFite I had never met before today. I was on my lunch break at the Big Famous Indie Bookstore and killing time by wandering the aisles. This bushy-headed dude came up to me and said something that sounded like 'wurga-wurga-on-filter' over the ambient noise of the store. 'Huh?' I said. 'Do you post on Metafilter?' 'Uh, yeah.' "Oh, I'm nasreddin." "I guess you know who I am, dude." "Yeah." "Cool to meet you." "You, too" and then I was interrupted by a guy looking for The Celestine Prophecy.

I think a meta stream would be popular.

Basically, it would only show the last 50-100 comments.

Now, let's say I pass the very hard exam. I go onto Metafilter, and I feel conflicted. On the one hand, I want to announce to the MetaFilter world that I passed the exam. On the other hand, this is not FPP material, nor is it AskMeP or MetaP material. Now normally this means I can't do anything. But with a meta stream, I could just pop in, yell "I passed my exam! Woo!" and then pop out. This shout would be displayed on that list of comments. All of my contacts would see that I had put a shout out, and there would be a link to my comment. That link would still work after the 100 comments had scrolled by. This way, all my Metafilter friends could get the news all at the same time.

Shout outs would work like FPP posts. You only get one per day (to keep someone from spamming the stream).

Not *that* difficult to implement and would solve the problem of people announcing their personal issues to metafilter or sharing things that few others give a damn about.
posted by Deathalicious at 5:05 PM on December 18, 2007

Can't you just use twitter for this? and then only the people who want to know about your exam will? or is that the problem that we're trying to solve?
