Let me know about the Mefi Lovin' January 8, 2008 4:46 AM   Subscribe

This may be a stupid question; it may well have been discussed in the posts regarding the Metafilter messaging system, but they are legion and I am inebriated. But can we have a message sent to our inbox if someone adds us as a "contact"?

Maybe this is already happening and it's just that no-one has befriended me lately. That may be because I'm an unrepentant arsehole. Maybe it's just the fact that I have received no mail at all since this feature was added. But I'd like to know if someone has taken the time to link to me.

Also, the text on the "Post a Thread to Metatalk" page fails to mention H.R.H. Cortex esq. as a possible point of contact regarding personal and/or immediate problems. I'd hate to think the little fella was getting a raw deal...

It shows up in the recent activities side bar on mefi proper.

(Or so says a guy I know with friends.)

I thought it might. But that recent activities sidebar scrolls by so damn fast, what with all the high quality posts buy all my fellas.

It does. I saw it once.

Prune your list of fellas, and it won't go so fast.

Would it be dishonest to friend you if I really just want to be friends with your dog?

Can I be sent mail when Jimbob gets a friend too? He's a fiesty drunk and I want to see who's enabling him.

As the non-official, self designated spokesman, who has no decision making power, authority or right to speak for the admins, I'm happy to say yes.

You could always edit your contact activity so only the "Added Me" feature shows up.

Ding! There's a link at the bottom of that sidebar that goes to the contact activity page in all its glory; you can use that to get a nice view of anything in particular, including contactery.

Matt has been pretty hesitent to add any auto-mail functions to Mefi Mail from day one, so barring a change of heart I don't think this will turn out to be an exception.

No? I think actually we were planning to implement this once the super-contacting died down in teh wake of the new sidebar, but I'm not sure where on the "to do" list it is.
posted by jessamyn (staff) at 8:03 AM on January 8, 2008

I could be remembering wrong. I remember an argument toward the negative side of a feature that could lead to a piles of auto-mefimail shooting out via mailforwarding to real servers, potentially getting the mailer flagged as spam and compromising the usefullness of mail forwarding. And also Matt just kinda not liking the idea. But see first sentence, heh.

"Yay! I have mail.... oh, it's just another stupid contact notification."
posted by smackfu at 8:49 AM on January 8, 2008

At first read, I thought you were asking for the ability to have MeFiMail forwarded to your regular e-mail address, but only if the person lists you as a contact. Which might not be a bad idea, if only the implementation were reversed so that it's forwarded only if you list them as a contact. Because just about anyone can list you as a contact, outside of your control.

Also, to threadjack, I was thinking it might be nice to have on our profile pages frequent tags for posts we comment in. For example, from my posting history, you might guess that I like music and flash games, but you'd have no idea that I tend to comment a lot in posts tagged with say, sleep and/or dreaming, although I am not often the poster of such. It also has the benefit of allowing us to see which folks tend to be newsfilter mavens (including those who show up in NF threads just to crap on them). If people like this idea, I can give it its own MeTa thread.

Thanks for listening/reading!

I'd love to get an automail every time there's a pileon and/or flameout. That would be hawt.

Ooo, admin fight! Careful cortex, jessamyn has a wicked right hook and supposedly trained with the ancient and honorable Dew Wee Sys librarian ninjas. She can file you where you'll NEVER be found.

Astro Zombie, if you move to a small enough universe that curves onto itself, and run straight forward very fast, as in so fast that stop signs look blue, you may be able to bite the back of your own head.

Wearing dentures might be easier easier.
