I often head over to MeTa, expecting some fresh craziness to entertain me on sleepless nights, only to find nothing new there, or, worst of all, something actually useful. I'm right with you, disillusioned. posted by Kattullus at 7:14 PM on February 20, 2008

Last year, y2karl reminisced about scrolling through the lofi version of the front page, and noted that he had a whole month of posts there. I had only seven days and wanted more, more, but alas, it was not to be. quonsar disabused me of my poor dream. posted by cgc373 at 7:38 PM on February 20, 2008

Don't get real numbers until it's hit that third week, at least.
But we were talkin' about a meetup again last weekend. posted by klangklangston at 8:59 PM on February 20, 2008

Four months is where it really heats up, over in the meetup threads.
I just went over to the meetup archives to see if there were any shenanigans to join in and was disappointed to find there weren't.
I did notice though that the latest thread to close [Aug 16: Santiago, Chile] has "This thread is over 30 days old, and has been closed for archival purposes." I know this is technically true but shouldn't it be saying '180 days'? posted by tellurian at 9:28 PM on February 20, 2008

I don't want two-week old drama to keep going and going forever.
Not that I'm suggesting any changes, but isn't this reason pretty much disemboweled by the "Recent Activity" link, and that a metatalk argument can and does go on forever so long as people keep replying, and it bubbles up in that queue? posted by Dave Faris at 1:53 AM on February 21, 2008
Bump? No Volleyball terminology. ONLY EQUINE. You set yourself up for failure. Plus, even with this recent spike in posts, it's not that big a deal to just hit the 'older posts' link. posted by cashman at 5:22 AM on February 21, 2008 [1 favorite]
Here's the thing I don't get.
disillusioned posted a vaguely worded MetaTalk thread. The general consensus in the comments was that we had no fucking idea what he was talking about.
And yet... no follow-up. No comment saying, "Oh, sorry, let me explain.."
He's just disappeared into the ether.

what's the deal with everyone starting sentences with "yeah, no..."? posted by lohmannn at 6:35 AM on February 21, 2008
My only MeTa post was a joke one about "what's up with all the turkey posts" on thanksgiving. I can make more like that though -
"What's up with all the leprechaun/shamrock posts?"
"What's up with all the egg//bunny/crucifixion posts?" posted by Mister_A at 6:41 AM on February 21, 2008
lohmann, that makes we want to stab people in the eye with a knitting kneedle. Yeah, no, srsly. posted by Mister_A at 6:42 AM on February 21, 2008
matt, why can't you code the metatalk titles to be like bumper cars? Then we'd have nice videogame and could bump the titles all around the metalk's homepage. posted by Brandon Blatcher at 6:55 AM on February 21, 2008

Half-disembowels it. Anybody who has commented in the thread and who uses Recent Activity is, yeah, autolongboated in; but for folks who missed it the first time, the window of opportunity for becoming a Fresh Voice of Drama is a lot lower with a short index than a long one. Probably reduces the number of flareups, at least.

Well, in the southern hemisphere at least, 180 is more than 30, so it is, technically, over 30 days old. Now, if it said something like "This thread has been closed for archival purposes as it is over 30 days old", you might have a case.
Oh, come on! You were all thinking it! posted by dg at 2:02 PM on February 21, 2008

What's the deal with posts starting with "So ...", as if we're having drinks, in the middle of a conversation, and you're making some sort of a trenchant inference? We're not, damnit! You're starting a topic! Drives me batty. I'm going outside. posted by metric space at 4:18 PM on February 21, 2008
A much better idea: how about we halve the number of posts in MeTa? Seriously, half of what's posted is craptacularly stupid: someone whinging about having their MeFi post deleted, someone whinging about not liking an AskMe response, someone whinging about how so-and-so was so mean, etcetera.

five fresh fish said stuff about all those whinging kids getting off his grass, and I just have to say that no matter how many times I see the word "whinging", it always looks wrong.

But it's so deliciously unnecessary to write it out that way! The silent "g" is sublime, elevating mere snark to snobbery. It's theatre, my man, good theatre! posted by five fresh fish at 10:18 PM on February 22, 2008
