Outright censorship?

I was super-censored by Jessamyn. You won't even find this on Deleted threads with GreaseMonkey.

http://www.metafilter.com/75263/Documented-History-of-the-Bubble

All the supporting docs are in the second link and Jessamyn super-deletes it because it's "kind of sketch"?

Smacks of censorship. I didn't think she rolled that way.

There is no such thing as super-deletion as much as we might wish otherwise. MeFi has general standards for front page posts and yours linked to something deleted once already. It was finally pulled because the media disappeared but we'd been having a behind the scenes debate about the video anyhow because it's borderline conspiracy theory racist if I recall correctly. The original discussion wasn't that great and we saw no reason to think any more would go better.

If you want to post borderline edgy stuff to MetaFilter -- which is your right, really -- it might be a good idea if you also learned a little bit about how the site works and what you can maybe expect from the site. This link might have been decent in one of the bailout threads already in progress but was not great as a FPP.

That is how I roll.

It's a weird slanted ten minute attempt at a viral political video to encourage people to vote for McCain by presenting a bizarre retelling of events that support that conclusion. Along the way it manages to push the "illegal immigrants took our jobs" button and stops just short of "jews did it" allegations.

The story it tells is not credible [I'm not disputing "facts" only the way theyre asembled to present this one narrative which I think is actually sort of crazy] and we're already discussing the mortgage crisis and the bailout in better ways elsewhere on the site. We'd delete it the same way. Really I understand that you're arguing that we removed this post, or that *I* removed this post because it takes an unfavorable look at who you think I'm likely to vote for. I'm not sure how I can convince you otherwise, in fact I don't think I can convince you otherwise.

There is a certain extent to which the flag queue does represent the general gestalt politics of the site as a whole, but we also make our own judgments as moderators. While you're welcome to do your bit to balance out the political leanings of this site, I suggest you do it with content that is a little less crazy-seeming and make your callouts a little better informed and/or a little less aggressive.

We'd like to have a plurality of opinions, political and otherwise, on MeFi and I think all of us believe one thing is true about that video: both parties have made mistakes. Posts that just slag McCain in the same hamfisted OMG way don't last any longer than ones that slam Obama and generally speaking political posts should be something more than a "vote my guy/gal!" shill piece which the end of this video clearly shows it to be.

Rafaelloello: Facts - Good... Conclusions - Bad? ... How would you assemble the facts? BTW, why do you feel compelled to put quotes around the word facts? Tell the "truth".

"Facts" deserves quotations when true details about a situation are adduced to imply a false idea of the whole. It is a fact that Hollywood in the '50's and '60's included many Jewish people who were producers and directors. If someone came to me and claimed that "the Jews ran Hollywood," I might tell them that, despite the "facts," I have a dispute with their claim. I'd put "facts" in quotations there because he and I might have a disagreement about where those facts start and his lip-flapping foolishness began; I'd want to make sure that I'd indicated to him that I didn't take at face value certain silly notions that he seemed to have accepted from the situation. "Facts" have interpretations. Sometimes people interpret them in a silly way. That's what the video did.

If you believe that jessamyn is a partisan hack, you probably haven't been around here very long. (Do you have any idea how many 'PALIN IZ DUMM' threads that the mods have had to delete over the last few weeks? And they do, believe me.) That, or you're one of those obnoxious partisan people (they exist on the left and the right) who believes that anyone who disagrees with them must be working for the enemy.

In which case there's really no hope for you, my friend.

No. You're not only not going to do that viral astroturfing shit here, I forbid you from doing it anywhere. This is now the seventh time (I've been keeping track) that I've heard the republican spin that the housing crisis is caused by Hispanics/black/minorities/poor. A memo must have gone out the night Paulson proposed the plan because jowly white douchebags from all over are all simultaneously on board with the same talking points.

Let me be perfectly clear. It is true that there exists a non-zero probability that risky loans to lower-income people, who by virtue of demographics happen to be disproportionately members of an ethnic minority, may be responsible for a single digit integer percentage of the housing bubble. This is true in the way that a butterfly flapping it's wings in China may have contributed to hurricane Katrina. But the inference that this video intends the viewer to draw is that minorities are a major contributing cause for the whole crisis, which is not true. Of course, if you tell them this, they give a clever smile and say "But I didn't say that!" Oh, you're too shrewd for me! I guess I'll just have to counter your cleaver argument by opening your throat with a K-bar.

The video and these talking points are tailored to capitalize on an pre-existing prejudice, the same prejudice that makes people imagine black people when they think of people on welfare, even though more white people are on welfare. In their twisted worldview, the thesis that minorites defaulted on their debts makes too much sense to fact check.

So I'm going to engage in a little prejudice of my own. But mine is supported by data.

The majority of the cause of the bubble lies with incompetent morons who missed out on the dotcom riches, have no marketable skills to speak of, and yet want to get theirs. They watch "Flip This House" and took interest-only mortgages on "investment" properties so they could finance their McMansion with the high end GE Monogram Appliances on a combined income of $78,000.

These people are fat, indolent, greedy, petty, parochial suburbanites who watch too much television and never read a book, who are now voting for Sarah Palin and Macho Man Randy McCain because he's a war hero/christian/hockey mom/not-a-black-guy.

"I'm a Maverick." Fuckin-a right, man. You dumped your bedridden first wife for fabulously rich heiress to finance becoming the senator of a state almost half of which is owned by the federal government after which you led an unremarkable career. That sounds exactly like Daniel Webster or Henry Clay. Yeah man, you're a Maverick. Next time you see Goose and Iceman in the locker room, given them a nod and tell them, "Nice pecs."

I'm supposed to believe the banking system of the United States was brought to its knees by low-income minorities who had the temerity to pursue the dream of owning their home. All those hot shot MBAs and Ivy League lawyers were no match for those wily housekeepers and gardners.

If you could put a number on it, just exactly how stupid do you think we are? Two banks failed in Belgium this week, shithead, and it's only Tuesday. Did the dirty Mexicans do that too?

I'm sure it had nothing to do with the house flipping, the thousands of real estate investment books and seminars that were sold to suburban meat bags, or the greed and consumption culture that dominated America in the 2000s. I'm sure it has nothing to do with the toxic psychology that has these same people bitching about gas prices and how much they spent to fill up their SUV. If you drove an SUV when gas was $4.00 and you complained even once about gas prices, you should be stripped down, chopped up, and sold for parts.

The next time I see some beady-eyed pig of a pundit bring up lending to minorities as the underlying cause of this, I'm severing ears and making a fucking necklace. This is a transparent attempt to back into the campaign fears of A BLACK MAN IN THE WHITE HOUSE by framing the issue in the context of the current crisis.

You know this video is viral spin bullshit. I hope you got paid to post it here, because otherwise you either think we are stupid or the people who made the video think you're stupid and will believe it and pass it around. Guess which one I think it is.

Agreed. You can't teach an old dog... no, that's not it... you can lead a horse... hmm... and teacher, there are things that I don't want to learn.

Now if you would just apologize for calling it a crazy conspiracy video, we can probably close this out.

What would you prefer it be called? Astro-turfing bullshit that lays the blame for this massive economic fuck up right at the feet of the people who are going to be the most hurt by it, brought to you by a man who apparently can win unless he lies, lies, lies, and then tosses out casual racism and classism, all the while grinning and pretending he is a maverick who somewhere in his eighty-seven houses has a closet just full of concern for the poor?

Because I'll call it that if you prefer.

It is censorship? Fuck yes. You got censored, dude. It's their fucking site. You don't like it, go to some other goddamn site where pissing on the poor with a poor assemblage of anecdotes is treated as gospel. There are a lot of sites like that. I imagine that's where you found the video in the first place.

You're right, my bad, I shouldn't have called it a "crazy conspiracy". I meant to say it's batshit insane to blame minorities for the financial crisis.
