Chicago meetup?

I'm going to be in town between the 11th and 23rd and will be able to get together after the 14th. I'm seeing the Pretenders on the 15th and want to watch the Oscars on the 22nd ---and would be willing to join people for those things, but I'm not free at all the 18th.

So 18th-21st? If it's any day but the Wednesday, I'm potentially in. Brujita, where are you staying (general area)?
posted by nax at 3:40 AM on January 27, 2009

In the Magnificent Mile area....but I plan to get a farecard and can go anywhere on the el. My preference would be someplace other than the Billy Goat.

OK, I'm calling it for February 20th, time and location tba.

Well, in the Mag Mile area there's the traditional Billy Goat. We do these things once a month there, now, first Wednesday, but I'm always down for meeting out-of-towners, so count me in. There's not much down in that area that's meetupawesome, if you ask me, bu tthe Goat's pretty cool, which I assume is why we use it.

As I said, I'll be getting a farecard. I've made several trips to Chicago, but the last time was five years ago.

I've been looking at the Chicago Zagat , Citysearch and Time Out restaurant guides and Hopleaf looks most appealing to me.

Hopleaf is great. And ridiculously crowded and impossible to get a table unless you get there at 5pm. And the 20th is a Friday? Even worse. You have to realize it's a tiny place and there are maybe 10 4-person tables with barely room to walk around them in the bar area, including the booths. There's a restaurant in the back but it's also tiny. That said, I live nearby and I'm up for giving it a shot if someone can get there early to nab a table or two.

There are lots of other great places in the same neighborhood as Hopleaf (which is nowhere near downtown and is a decent walk from the Red Line - just making sure you're aware.) Other places include T's, Broadway Cellars, Moody's, etc. (See my comment in the north side meetup thread here.)

Downtown that's not the Goat? Hmmm... The Berghoff is pretty cool and is quintessential Chicago (it's where I got married) but I'm not sure what the bar's like on a Friday night. Could be packed, could be dead, I've just never been there at that time. The Gage is tasty but expensive and probably pretty crowded on a Friday. Potter's Lounge is in the Palmer House and I know you're thinking "ew, hotel bar" but it's pretty cool and I've had good luck with getting tables there even on weekend nights. They have great truffled potato chips.

Hmmm...Poag Mahone looked interesting, but they close at 9. I spent two years at grad school in Iowa and remember the triple layers and balaclava I needed when the temperature was in the teens.Berghoff is an idea and I'm glad they've been able to survive. Potter's? If it's the same place as five years ago I've been there and thought it was a meat rack. Moody's, Charlie's and T's all look good. Does anyone like Duke of Perth?
posted by brujita at 9:19 PM on January 29, 2009

We met up in the basement of the Drake once. Had a great time, but we were also piss drunk from the Goat.

We've met up at Duke of Perth too, now that I think of it. Good place, a little pricey, can fill up fast on weekends, though I think there's an upstairs that's rarely used, if memory serves.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE DUKE OF PERTH, ahem stumbling distance to my home, but not a great idea on a Friday with a large crowd, unless the back is open. Like Hopleaf, it's a neighborhood place, so small.

Loopish? I've had success snagging the front room at Monk's for a large crowd. It's L-friendly, so is the Exchequer.

Loopish gets me there after 7 (coming from Evanston), but I'm up for it. Anything midnorth? like off Armitage-Wellington-Fullerton-Belmont stops? Or North&Clybourn stop?

Moody's and Exchequer look like they'd be the best fit ....and I'd like to sample the latter's pizza.

7:30 at the Exchequer.

D'oh! Just realized that's a roller derby night. Sorry, folks: have fun!

You know eamon--the guy who cuts my hair is a roller derby team guy. The other team, though, I guess.

Is anyone going to the Pretenders?

Hello MeFi buddies. I'm going to be in town between the 12th and 13th and then again on the 16th and 17th, but only for half a day. Oh, a lot of it depends on what phase the moon is in and does anyone have any predictions of the ambient temperature? At the jet stream level, I mean? Because I can only come out if it's less than 20 at night, but more than 20 during the day, unless it's in the teens during a crescent moon in which case I can come out but only until 9pm, oh and each night I'm tied up with my sewing circle between 5pm and about 1am when the bar closes, but then I have ultra-late night mass which lasts from 3am until the following Tuesday.

So let me know what works for you guys and let's meetup!

Trying to talk mr nax into coming with (he's a lurker). Dumped my Friday gig, so we should be able to get there no problem.

I forgot I'm busing out to Cleveland that night. Looks like I'm gonna be lame. Oh, well, at least I made it to one meetup this month.

Me3dia and cinnamon have met me in person and I've put my cell in my profile (call and text only). I have long curly hair, glasses and am wearing a black shirt and pants.

I look forward to meeting the rest of you!

Aw guys, looks like I'm not going to make it. I have a sick doggy (about to pick her up from the vet) and I think I need to stay in tonight to care for her. :( I'm so bummed! Have a good time, all.

Feel better, kazpup!

Wonderful evening, excellent pizza....it was good to see me3dia and cinnamon again and meet the others.

I took a few pictures, but it'll be some time before I can put them up. I'm going to Indiana on Tuesday.

mr nax conceded that it was way more fun than Option B-- dinner at the Board president's. Thank you so much for sparing me that!
